Down the pan!

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: They have gone bust!

Oh dear oh dear, Drake insurance has gone into liquidation. That means that anyone with a ploicy stands to lose out big time, and even worse, if you have had an acident, then you really are up the spout, as Drake will only pay out 90%, and then you have your excess on top. It just goes to show that it does not matter who you are insured with, (Drake were the fourth largest in the UK) things can still go badly wrong. It is not always advisable to ... more

Down the Swanney

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Inefficient, Slow

...year, before I knew that Drake had got into trouble. However, even whilst it was still opreating the customer service was slow, and not very helpful. When I met with an accident, it took them a few hours to get back to me with a garage to repair my car. They were not forthcoming with a courtesy car whilst mine was in the garage, although the deal with the fully comprehensive poilicy was that one would be provided. The excess paid took months to ...

Beware who they arrange your car insurance with!

Advantages: They do try and get you a decent price
Disadvantages: They do not insure you directly ? your actual insurer might give you problems

AA Insurance don?t do a bad job. To be fair they appear to have a search system designed to give you a good price. I was pleased with mine to start with, 10% off what I was paying and my insurance excess was reduced to £50 on any claim. Pretty decent I thought. My policy came through and I discovered that it was through Drake Insurance. I had not heard of them, but did not think it would be a problem as having been found through the AA they would be a reputable company which would not give me any problems. They may well have been a decent company, but it did not stop them entering liquidation. Since then I have had a multitude of forms to fill in. Worst of all due to Drake Insurance entering liquidation I might have to pay for repair work on a broken windscreen. Not very impressive for a fully comprehensive policy. So due to ...

Made the best of a bad situation

Advantages: ease of use, good quotes
Disadvantages: telephone only

Nightmare scenario - two months into an annual policy, all prepaid, your insurance underwriter goes bust! Argh! This happened to me (and many others) with the demise of Drake Insurance earlier this year. What this actually meant to policyholders depended very much on the broker you had used, and I had the good fortune of having gone via Budget! My initial decision to use Budget was based entirely on cost - the quote was approx. £60 cheaper than the competitors. However, when Drake sank (excuse the pun) Budget showed its worth. I have heard from others who lost the remainder of their policy and the premium and were having to to the policyholders protection board (if that is the right name) to look for compensation. Budget, however, after letting us sweat for a while, merely asked for the return of the old insurance documents and issued ...

Review of Budget Insurance Company Limited

Good for Students

Advantages: Friendly Service
Disadvantages: Can be disorganised

brilliant introductory rates and i probably will go back to them at the end of my current insurance if they can offer a better deal. For non students i have heard they are not as good as the others but still competitve. The company was very good when Drake Insurance went under, they informed me of developments and what was happening with my insurance. Most people lost their policies altogether but Endsliegh held everyones policy that was with Drakes until another insurance company took them on. Very few companies did not do this as was reported in the press. This was impressive from a small company when most of the others dumped their policy holders without a worry. At the end of the day its best to shop around and tell the companies what price youve got and dont let try and push you into a decision. Some try and say we can only hold ...
