Monumental film-making
Review of The Apu Trilogy DVD by
Rosebud1985
Advantages: Great films
Disadvantages: Disappointing extras, so-so transfer
One of the greatest filmmakers to have ever lived, presents his greatest cinematic achievement; the Apu trilogy directed by Satyajit Ray is a must buy for all fans of film. Now that it's on DVD, there is simply no excuse to not buy it!The trilogy is made up of three feature length movies, each on a separate disc, concerning the life of an Indian villager, called Apu. The first film concerns his childhood in his village, where the boy lives in childhood ... ...is particularly poignant due the tragic ending, casting a shadow over everything you have seen before. There are so many highlights, but my favourite moments of the film are seen between the subtle observations over the competition between various famillies in the village.
In the second film Apu's family moves to the big City- Calcutta, where the father tries to earn more than an occassional pittance he received back in the village as a priest. ...

Exhilarating Elgar documentary
Review of Elgar DVD by
Maestrolover
Advantages: A Ken Russell classic not to be missed
Disadvantages: None, unless you are expecting a Ken Russell "shocker"
...renowned British composer Edward Elgar (1857-1934) in order to celebrate the 100th edition of "Monitor". Naturally it was an ambitious project, not least in that unlike today's no holds barred documentaries, Russell had to adhere to some pretty strict rules imposed by Wheldon and the BBC. The most restrictive was that there was a ban on the dramatisation of the lives of real people at that time on the BBC. So Russell was forced to accept a compromise: ... ...- 1962 - composer Edward Elgar had been going through a period of neglect, and the knowledge and awareness of his music tended to concentrate mainly on the "Pomp and Circumstance" side of his compositions. Ken Russell set out to try and change this rather restricted and unrealistic image - and succeeds brilliantly in revealing a far more emotionally complex and sensitive individual.
The programme "Elgar" basically provides an overview of Elgar's ...

Dum tee dum tee dum tee diddle diddle
Review of The Quiet Man DVD by
RobinLawrie
Advantages: A great film
Disadvantages: not a one
“Now, I'll begin at the beginnin'. A fine soft day in the spring it was when the train pulled into Castletown three hours late as usual, and himself got off. He didn't have the look of an American tourist at all about him. Not a camera on him. And what was worse, not even a fishing rod.”
These are the opening words spoken by Father Lonergan (Ward Bond), in John Ford’s classic film The Quiet Man. Filmed in 1952. It was nominated ... ...mostly in Ireland, it is the story of boxer Shaun Thornton (John Wayne) and the collision course between himself and the local bully, Squire Red Will Danaher (James McLaglen). The plot becomes further entangled when he falls in love with the man's feisty, red-haired, sister Mary Kate (Maureen O'Hara). She is insistent that her dowry is collected from her brother, whilst Shaun who has made his fortune as a prize boxer, wants nothing to do with it.

About a, Boy what a good film!
Review of About A Boy (Wide Screen) by
ITL101
Advantages: Great deep story line.
Disadvantages: Can become a little predictable
...so he doesn't tell anyone about him not having a child. Yet Will and Marcus start to bond and form a great relationship. However Will tries to constantly remind himself that he is an island and not to get too attached to Marcus, but he cannot stop himself from being a part of Marcus' life. This comedy is brought to life by its realistic scenarios and the serious issues which are outlined in the film intrigue and engulf the viewer's attention. The ... ...events. For example when Fiona, Marcus' mother, attempts to commit suicide Will is following behind the ambulance and through voice over which displays his thoughts he says, "It was terrible! Terrible! But driving really fast behind the ambulance was fantastic!"
So is it all good? Well, yes. This is a great film to watch on a rainy day and by the end of the film it will leave you smiling but at the same time with a tear in your eye. This film brings ...

Dirty Dungeoness, Sleazy Sex
Review of I Want You by
sghawken
Advantages: Compelling viewing if you let it draw you in
Disadvantages: Has a high opinion of itself, this may deter some viewers
I could not sleep last night, and at 2am I awoke and decided to go and watch some television, within minutes I was drawn to the movie I Want You, a title I remembered but were a little uncertain as to why. Within a few seconds however my mind rushed back through time as the story, (one I was little interested in at the time) came flooding back even though it had been ten years since I last saw it. I Want You seem's very much the sort of movie you ... ...shares a terrible secret.
I Want You is a very deceptive movie, there is rather a lot going on, but at the same time little story development, things just trudge along for more or less the movies whole running time; somehow however it seems like a movie you do not want to turn away from. Everyone is slightly creepy or unusually uncomfortable with either themselves or their sexuality, all except the sexually uninhibited Smokey who knows who and what ...
