A ray of light
Review of At First Sight (Wide Screen) by
Stief
Advantages: Thought Provoking
Disadvantages: A little depressing
This film is truly thought-provoking. It really brings reality to life. For many of us, myself included, take things for granted, like our major senses; this film puts us in our place. However it does portray this theme in a subtle way. The subject of "blindless" is reversed- as in a blind man gains his sight and the difficulties of adapting to life with light are highlighted. The good side to this film shows that you can find love in whatever situation ...

Streets ahead
Review of The Street - Series 1 - Complete DVD by
kevindye
Advantages: Wonderful, thought-provoking and gripping
Disadvantages: None
...I died - and quickly. The cash machine swallowed my card. So... made penniless and sentenced to death - just an average day really. Still, I can withdraw money tomorrow, and I doubt Mr. Atzel will be able to track me down and murder me, so all's well that ends well. Sometimes, there is a happy ending. Which brings me on to 'The Street', written by the legendary Jimmy McGovern, where there is generally a happy ending in each episode.
How well do ... ...home-made Bailey's cheesecake; Derek on the other, a writer who tells me to turn my music down if I throw a party. But I don't know what goes on inside their houses - do I really want to? Yes, if its anything like 'The Street'.
Each episode of this 6-part drama, tells the story of the inhabitants of one household on 'The Street'. Each story kind of intertwines with other stories, so some characters appear in more than one episode, but each one has ...

The weird and wonderful world of Jeunet
Review of City Of Lost Children DVD by
nickyturnill
Advantages: Imaginative, bizarre, unique, eccentric and memorable characters.
Disadvantages: Commonly badly dubbed over, somewhat complicated plot.
...and so we hired The City of Lost Children which Jeunet co-directed with Marc Caro and which was released in 1995. The City of Lost Children is a bizarre, dark fantasy film, primarily set on an old oil rig off the French coast. The film starts with a clip of a young boy on Christmas morning who wakes up to find Santa sliding down the chimney. This typically jolly, friendly Santa shows the clearly thrilled and amazed lad an old fashioned toy. But then ... ...he is known. The City of Lost Children contains some fantastic special effects, with great music throughout, setting the tone and creating suspense or lightening the mood as required. I was surprised to film that, unlike Amelie and Delicatessen, the film is not subtitled but dubbed in English, unfortunately not very well. I would personally have preferred to have seen the film in French, I don’t have any issues with subtitles and I think that the ...
