Disadvantages: None

"Greatest Civil War Film Ever Made"
Review of Glory DVD by MattMan101

Advantages: Stunning performances and unforgettable
Disadvantages: In places historically incaurate

...fight for their freedom" Glory is without a doubt one of the greatest civil war films ever made. The film follows a black regiment of soldiers (the fifty-forth) through their training and eventually to fighting in the civil war. There is a great line-up of cast members, proving to be some of their greatest on screen roles to date. The film stars Matthew Broderick as col. Robert Gould Shaw along with Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Cary Elwes. ...
...to point out there are several flaws in the films historical accuracy. The most important being, in the film, the fifty fourth are portrayed as the first regiment of black soldier. It is true that they were among the first, but not actually the first black regiment. Along with this most of the slaves who were in the fifty forth had not previously escaped slavery as is portrayed in the film. But most of this can be excused as overall as a result; ... Read review

Military Mystery
Review of Courage Under Fire DVD by Ayesha-

Advantages: A good story, lots of action, moving
Disadvantages: Not many, see review..

The film begins with some historical clips of wars in recent history. This makes perfectly clear the theme of the film, but also allows you a little time to think of your own ideas on what the film might be about. This was, for me, the first film of its kind that I had watched, so my ideas were mostly wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though, & watched it again, twice. Now it has come onto television again, so I decided to give it a go for a review. ...
...involving huge tanks, Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling gives the order to fire at a tanker that turns out to be friendly. A tape has recorded exactly what was said in that tank that night, revealing the truth about what happened, but the army seems determined to keep it covered up. Burdened, not only with the task of informing the families of the dead, but with the guilt of feeling that this was his fault, he returns home, suffering terrible ... Read review

What more could a Brat Packer want?
Review of Brat Pack Collection - Breakfast Club / About Last Night / St Elmo's Fire DVD by Firelynxx

Advantages: Two of the best Brat Pack movies ever, plus an extra
Disadvantages: Could have chosen a better third movie

Well ok if life was perfect The Outsiders would be on here too. But for anyone wanting a does of eighties nostalgia along with great eighties music, look no further. Best of the bunch has to be The Breakfast Club, when I first saw it I thought "that's me" - should I tell you that the character that was me was the "basket case" played by Ally McSheedy?? I looked like her and acted like her - ok, I didn't throw pieces of ham at walls, but I am a vegetarian! ...
...bad boy with a heart that he didn't want you to see, Judd Nelson. Swoon :-). Sadly he never matched his performance or charisma after this movie, even in St Elmo's fire. The rest of the cast are very good, Emilio Estevez and Molly Ringwald probably the ones who went on to the most successful careers. The Breakfast Club tells the story of a six high school students on detention on a Saturday morning, and other then them, the janitor and the idiot ... Read review

Blood Diamond - A (half) decent film...
Review of Blood Diamond DVD by AlanSmithee

Advantages: Good action sequences (Better enjoyed on a big screen)
Disadvantages: Inconsistant/ underdeveloped characters

On paper this film has everything: An engaging storyline, big-name actors, a director with a great pedigree and a good high-tempo plot - but, for me at least, its lacking something. The opening scenes primed me to fall in love with this movie as a point of empathy for the plight of Djimon Hounsou's likeable character was quickly established, while at the same time Leonardo DiCaprio's "Danny Archer" was set-up as a sharp but clearly vulnerable man ...
..."Catch Me If You Can"). The more-than-capable Jennifer Connelly provides Leo's love interest in this action/adventure tale, set in the War-torn African nation of Sierra Leone at the end of the 20th century. Sad to say though, overall, this film failed to live up to my (high) expectations. I found the "one-on-one" scenes shared by DiCaprio and Connelly to be tiresome and boring rather than anything else while the picture relied too heavily on its ... Read review
