The other fault code readers for Fords are a 5 pin and a scart type connector. At the time I had a 1.3 HCS engine which has a 3pin connect and I used this to diagnose my engine cutting out.
The reader works in a simple way by using an led that flashes on and off and at different speeds. It connects to a plug that has 3 pins which is connected to you ECU(cars main computer). I found this very hard to use because you didn't know when it was reading or outputting a code. To start off with it reads to ECU adn then outputs the code. In the end I wrote down every flash and then worked it out by testing the equipment the code related to. A really good site for explaining this better in details is... http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/Reference/FCRReading.html
Although it did eventually diagnose the problem it took a long time as I didn't really know what I was doing and to me wasn't explained good enough. But at £10 it is far cheaper than many of the other products and I simply fancied a dabble at fault code reading without spending loads of money. With the fault code reader, a Ford TIS manual and Haynes manual I did actually learn a lot about my car but it was hard to use to start off with.
If you're new to this like me I'd say buy one that displays the code in a better way. If you don't have the money for them type then buy this but be prepared to spend a while wondering what is happening, was that a code, was it simply self testing or is there too many codes coming through.
All in all, a good little tool if you fancy a play about.
