Padlocks are sold as various types, and these are classed as "long shackle" ones, this means they will fit ordinary hasps & staples, as well as other difficult items like chains etc. My experience of using them is on my old Navy kitbag, These locks are difficult to break into, but not impossible. . . Brass - Let me just explain that brass. is an alloy of copper and zinc, sometimes traces of aluminium are also added. One of the advantages of making Padlocks out of brass, is the fact that it does not rust, although the inside of the padlock is steel, so requires oil now and then - The size of keys may be important to you, they do tend to be a lot smaller than with conventional key operated locks, although you can buy these brass ones with combination locks - also another plus is the the ease of fitting - also they are very cheap nowadays - and they provide a visible deterrent, especially if they are a good sized chunk of yellow metal. Disadvantages - they can be forced fairly easily, but not quietly - they are only as strong as the hasp & staple it is on, which in turn are just as strong as the material they are fixed ...
