Draught Real Ales

When I spotted this category I wasn't really sure whether I should write in it and also not sure of what I was expected to write! The heading "Draught Real Ales" is extremely broad and could cover so much that you as the reader and I as the writer could be here indefinitely. I decided therefore ... Read review

Real Ale is no small beer

Advantages: No hangovers, great taste
Disadvantages: Struggling industry under threat from smoothpour

I've been a real ale drinker since I discovered that Lager gives headaches & hangovers 'cos of the rubbish in it. I also brew my own booze, too. Real ale tends not to have chemicals used in it's production and in the final result. And you'd be supporting local small industry in no small part if you partook in your local handpulled pint. It can seem expensive, but when you compare the insipid likes of lager and bitter, a pint of Burtons Nightmare ...
...goes away. And not all real ales are super-strong, either, with many IPA's and gentler versions available. Hand-pulled beer tends to have less gas in it, too, and doesn't have all the taste chilled out of it. Theakston's ales are available in all sorts of packages, but the local to Masham, where it is made, is issued from proper barrels, so all the finings & hops are flavouring the mix unlike the dreadful alumimium-tainted alternative. A Fine Seasonal Beer From Crouch Vale

Advantages: Lovely fruity flavour full of character and hidden notes.
Disadvantages: Seasonal and a bit too strong for a session.

With a rather striking pump clip, this ale looked like it showed a lot of promise. Flame red and yellow set the backdrop for the Crouch Vale ship and the slogan "brimming with character" suggested plenty of flavour and interesting undertones. This ale has a good amber/gold colour and keeps a good head down the glass. Both ABV (5.0) and clip fooled me a little when I tasted the heavy grapefruit which was a little overpowering. I must admit I prefered ...
...down the glass I got lime and other citrus fruits and the hops came through as it did with the aroma. The strength did not hit me as I thought it might from an ale with such a high ABV and this ale turned out to be eminently drinkable and I was pleasantly suprised. Overall it was very fruity and refreshing. Crouch Vale Brewary Ltd. 12 Redhills Road South Woodham Ferrers Chelmsford Essex CM3 5UP www.crouch-vale.co.uk ...

John Smith's Bitter

Advantages: A good basic pint
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too basic?

is, in my opinion, on draught. It makes an ideal accompaniment for many different types of food from steak pies to curries and from a simple sandwich to something a little more substantial. It is available in pubs up and down the country. I am not certain if John Smith?s Bitter is still available as a ?real ale? draught or only on keg draught, as I have not seen John Smith?s Bitter on a ?beer engine? pump for some time. However, that might just be my bad luck! ...

Review of John Smith's Bitter

Wych beer will you be goblin tonight...

Advantages: Classic bottle and label design, full-bodied and flavoursome taste, Widely available in the UK
Disadvantages: Not especially good with food, Does not export much yet

. In fact, the Wychwood brewery has picked up a grand total of 20 different awards since its launch, which isn?t bad going at all. The Wychwood calls itself a ?fiercely independent? brewer, which is why it is able to produce such a range of wonderfully different and flavoursome beers. They currently have an excellent selection of both draught and bottled ales, with names such as Goliath, Lucifer, Black Wych and The Dogs Bollocks, each distinctive and somehow more tempting than the mass produced ?brand? beers you get these days. This review, though, is on their best selling bottled ale (in fact the 5th best selling bottled ale in the UK) ? Hobgoblin. - So what is Hobgoblin? As Wychwood?s top selling label, Hobgoblin has acquired something of a cult status amongst real ale fans ? it has also earned itself the Beer of the Festival ...

Review of Wychwood Hobgoblin Extra Strong Ale

THE GREENMANTLE

Advantages: Easy drinking session ale
Disadvantages: Not as widespread as it used to be

(assuming you have any, that is). It's a good thirst-quencher and a suitable ale to wash down any type of food (beers like this used to be known as table beers as they were drunk with meals instead of water). This used to be incredibly common in the pubs of the early-mid eighties but with the advent of more and more real ales, it is a little harder to find on draught these days. But, it is widely available in most supermarkets at around £1.50 for a 500 ml bottle. Would I drink it again? - Well, as they say in the Border country....yes.
