Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit
How fantastic can you get? Even better than the Playstation Pocketstation, the Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit has taken the world by storm by being the best memory unit there is! The Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit is really great, dependable and acts as a miniature games machine!
Run on watch batteries, you can fit two Visual Memory Units into one Dreamcast controller, and only using it o save your game on. During many games, miniature graphical images flash up on your Visual Memory Unit as you play. Some funny, some giving you hints and the like.
Not only for saving, the Visual Memory Unit can play minigames! Any games on the Dreamcast that support minigames can download them onto your Visual Memory Unit, and you can play them when travelling, as the Visual Memory Unit is so small. There are a variety of minigames available, some downloadable from the Internet. The one minigame that captivates me most is Pinta Quest, from Skies of Arcadia. With two Visual Memory Units, you can download Pinta Quest onto one, and play it while the battle scenes are proceeding. On Pinta Quest, you can gain gold, exp and items that can be downloaded back onto your game on Skies of Arcadia! It keeps the time, and you can play on the move.
Being so tiny, it’ll easily fit in your pocket and it’s ideal for while you’re travelling in a car or train and getting bored. It’s fun, smart and it’ll add to your saved game.
The official ones are a lot better, due to the fact that you know you are receiving the best quality. Third party peripherals get worse and worse. You can get third party Visual Memory Units that have no screen whatsoever. Now what use is that? I’d hate to have those, even if they are at half the price of the official ones.
At £20, people might find the Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit a little too expensive, but I think it’s well worth it. At £15 it’s gotta be a bargain, and the Visual Memory Unit is just a most needed peripheral for any Dreamcast owner.
Anyone who can find an official one for less than £19.99, could you e-mail me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Advantages:
Small Cheap Reliable Great fun Saves games Plays games
Disadvantages:
Plastic Maybe too small Easy to lose protective cover
Advantages: Good design, and great for playing games Disadvantages: None! (well battery life is shortish)
The Dreamcast VMU is one of the most innovative peripherals ever created for a games console, and I feel that Sega have designed more than a mere memory card here, and everyone will incorporate this idea in some way or other! The VMU stands for Visual Memory Unit, and is currently the only Official Sega product offering the save game facility, but it is also the best memory card available for your Dreamcast. It can save 200 blocks (1MB) worth of ... ...to the VMU via the Dreamcast Internet. There's Pac-Man, Tetris, Godzilla (very confusing as it is in Japanese), Various football games, Space Invaders, Etch-a-sketch, and all the mini games that are included with many Dreamcast games. There is the Chao adventure from Sonic adventure, a Sega GT racing and training mini game, some Soul Calibur games (online only - not from the game), some from Quake 3, and many more! The games aren't that complex, ...

...complain about. Sega's Dreamcast uses a VMU, which starts for Visual Memory Unit, which allows you to cart the card around with you and play 'mini-games' on the card thanks to it's inbuilt battery, D-pad and buttons. Much like a Tamagotchi. But better, in that you can actually choose what minigames you want to play. Being only a recent DC-er, I only have ChuChu Rocket and Sonic Adventure. Of those, Sonic allows you to transfer the not-too-inspiring ... ...than Snake on a mobile is. And it lets you advance further in the game (well, sort of). So, the VMU allows you to store data on the card itself. Useful. And play minigames. Fun, but kinda pointless. And get the time. Also, if you want to delete something, you don't have to do any funny business involving resetting the console, fiddling about with memory card management software lah de dah, as you just go in to the 'File' option on the card and browse ...

Advantages: It saves games Disadvantages: Don't expect a handheld games machine
...one since I've owned my Dreamcast and I've never replaced the batteries in it. They've run out so I can't use it as anything other than a memory card but that's what it was made for in the first place and it seems to be really good at it. I have yet to lose any data or have to format it so it seems perfectly adequate as a data storage medium.
You should have one of these if you have a Dreamcast, you really need it to save games otherwise you'll ... ...out on a lot of the extras. So if you have a Dreamcast then buy one and if you don't, don't. I wouldn't recommend buying a third party memory card, I have one and it just refuses to save my Sonic Adventure save games for any decent length of time. ...

Advantages: You can play small games with it while you are out and about. Disadvantages: The VMU's battery life isn't very long.
The Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit Unit is the best thing ever made for a games console. I bought the Dreamcast VMU and Dreamcast the day they came out and it was the best 320 quid i ever spent. i bought the VMU for 20 pound and i was gutted when i got it stolen with my dreamcast from my house.
The VMU's little screen can be used to play games that are downloadable from the internet. It might not be top quality graphics but the games are easy to play ... ...delete data without turning your Dreamcast on, so you are saving money on your elecricity. When you are playing it for ages you eyes do ache a bit but as always you just have to get used to it and then you will be ok.
You can even put a little mobile-phone like logo on them, but you have to delete all the data on your VMU so you should do it before you start to use it. It also contains a clock that you can change yourself but to make it easier you ...

Advantages: Stuff Hapening On The Memory Card Disadvantages: Battery Life Is Short Out Of The Pad
...hold up to 1mb of dreamcast save files and games (for the VMU), this is 200 blocks of storage.
The VMU can slot into any dreamcast pad and can slot in nicely into the gun and looks like a hi-tech gunclip.
The VMU doesn't have much battery life out of the pad, but you can still buy batteries for it now from some websites for about £5.
The VMU is quite pricey at £20 so i only suggest you get one for each pad and buy a large unnoficial Memory Card ...

Advantages: Cheap, Feels good to play, fast Disadvantages: lack of support
access to the internet, nothing filtered that i found, jpeg support, and it all looked very good and loaded fast enough for a console.
The VMU (Visual Memory Unit) is a wee catrige that you can plug into the controler, its main purpose is a memory card, but it has an LCD screeen, whic you can play games on. Some games come with mini games that can be saved on the VMU, or you can download wee games for it off the net. A good idea, and can be good for earning extra points, or building up creatures, etc, whils not actually on the dreamcast.
Although lacking in some games, the dreamcast is a quality unit, for an amazing price, and the support is still there for the internet access, VMU game updates etc.
Oerall, verry good for the price, and i would recomend a Dreamcast to everyone ...

Sega Dreamcast ? 6 Feet Under but not Dead Yet.
The Sega Dreamcast shaped gaming to what it is today, whether you noticed it or not. I pathed the way for a new type of gaming and though has been pulled out of manufacturing, isn?t dead yet.
* So what is a Sega Dreamcast? *
The Dreamcast is a 128-bit games console.
It was released in Europe in 1999 but a year earlier, in 1998 was released in Japan.
It was the first console to have a built In 56k modem
Aspects based around Microsoft CE
The Dreamcast featured online gaming and the ability to check email and browse the web before any other console even considered it.
Had 4 controller slots and featured a similar controller to the N64.
First and only console to have the unique Visual Memory Unit (VMU) with on screen tips, games and images of your last save.
* It may as well be ...
