Advantages Wow! Easy to create web apps, good support for filetypes

Disadvantages Not hugely robust

I loved Dreamweaver 4.. apart from the fact it separates you from the tedium of writing HTML code from scratch, it allows you to preview your pages in a browser without uploading them, allows you to upload them with a quick press on the keyboard (doing away with ftp clients), lets you view your code and layout at the same time, manage your site files and so many other little things that make a web developer's life easy...
But there was always room for improvement..

Hail Dreamweaver MX!!

Dreamweaver MX is everything the previous version of Dreamweaver was and more. It is much more geared to creating full scale Web Applications and more powerful.
It has better support for database interaction and for other file types (it will highlight PHP and Javascript code properly).
It has a multitude of extra features like allowing dynamic dropdown list values and inserting of ASP components.

For creating static, small websites that you will update manually there is no need to fork out for DreamweaverMX.. it'd be like banging a nail in with a sledgehammer.
But for anything else all the way up to full scale dynamic web applications its the way forward. I love it.

Beware however, it is slightly less robust than I would like, at least on my platform (PC running Windows 2000) and often freezes up, especially when putting files onto the server. It also takes slightly longer to learn how to use as there are more features to get to know and a new layout (although you can choose to stick to the Dreamweaver 4 layout)

I'm very new to web design, but have found the (used to be) free OpenOffice HTML editor most useful. Great op. cheers, Jaxle
