Meet Toby Dexter. He is a quiet single man just turned thirty three. He lives in Bradford-on-Avon and works in a bookshop in Bath. He is not really satisfied with his life, just going on day by day. There is a young lady that he sees sometimes on the Train who has a perfect mouth. He would like to get to know her better but has not yet worked up the courage.

After a routine dull day, arriving at the train station, he is caught in a shower of rain. Whilst trying to get one of those folding umbrellas up, He sees the lady open a door in the station buildings that he could have sworn was not there a moment ago. She goes through this door and Toby follows.....

Nothing will ever be the same for him, as he has crossed into the World of Mysterie from the World of Veritie. She warns him that it's a dangerous thing to be a mortal in the magical world of Mysterie and that he must not fall in love with her: she's much older than she looks and mortal must not love immortal. But for Toby, it's too late.

He has entered a world of Myth and magic, of Powers and Dominations in Bradford-on-Avon, The secret heart of the World. Peopled with Gods and immortals, shapeshifters and Demons- and when a human man falls in love with an immortal, everyone objects.

This is a tongue in cheek humorous fantasy by Simon R Green. Mr Green himself lives in Wiltshire and evidently knows the town of Bradford-on-Avon very well as the descriptions of The town and the surrounding countryside are realistic.

The characters portrayed in the book are as varied a bunch as you could ever hope to meet, on in some case not meet. The descriptions are very realistic, so much so that you could almost believe that this was a tourist brochure. Though quite what type of tourist I leave to your own imagination.

The action rattles along at a good pace to the final confrontation, When Toby will realise his destiny.

This work is not as dark as some of the works by Mr Green, I did catch some hints of Mr T Pratchett in the words, I am not aware if they know of each other or even if they may have read each others works. This is not the humour of Mr Pratchett's Discworld at all. This is based firmly on this world.

As you read this work you may note that some of the characters referred to appear in some of his other works. This book does not fit into the other series that Mr Green has written, Though there may be a deeper underlying structure that has not yet made itself evident.

In all this is a good read, It has good characters and a good pace. What drew me first to this book was its cover, I know that you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I was intrigued. Once I had read the details on the Back cover, I just had to buy it to find out if it was as strange as it looked. I was not disappointed. Give it a go and I hope that you will not be disappointed either.

Copies should be available at most larger stores priced at £6.99.
Amazon.co.uk lists this book at £9.99 reduced to £6.99 but that I think is their mistake.
