In Driver you play an ex-racing-car-driver-cop called Tanner who's gone into deep cover. You work for the mob and have to drive for them, rub people out (well, trash their cars anyway) and perform various jobs for them.
Your first mission is to prove yourself to the mob by passing a "driving test". You have to drive around a car-park, performing hand-brake turns, burnouts, slaloms and more. If you do this within the allotted time, without smashing your car against the wall then you're hired. If not, looks like you'll just have to try again. This is, in my opinion the second hardest mission in the game as it needs very good control of your car in a short time frame. Still, it puts you in good stead for the rest of the game.
The game "proper" is fairly easy. If you're a fan of driving games you should have no problem with it in general. My main problem at first was resisting crashing into things, because in Driver, if you crash, your car gets dented. If your car gets too damaged it won't go anywhere and it's mission failed.
Your major adversary in the game are the cops. In general, at the start of a mission they are not on the lookout for you. This is good. As soon as you do anything wrong whilst they can see you (like driving on the wrong side of the rod, hitting a car, running a red or driving too fast) they'll be on your tail like a rash. Once they see you being bad they'll call their mates as well - which is never good. My major tip for getting away from the cops once they're chasing you is the drive the wrong way down the road. If luck is on your side the cops will start swerving to avoid the oncoming traffic (especially good if it's raining) and you'll soon lose them.
And that's another good thing about the game. You have varying wheather conditions. Day or night, sunny or rainy, they all have an impact on your driving - as do the various different cars that you drive.
My favourite feature of the game has to be the director mode. Basically this lets you edit the replays for your missions just as you want them. All sorts of funky camera angles will ensue. And you can save that fantastic flip you did for posterity on your memory card.
My only real problem with the game is the amount of popup. This is especially notiable on replaying the game. But to be honest, it didn't detract form the game the first time that I played it so it can't be all that bad.
So all in all, a fairly easy game and I'd definately recommend it to anyone who enjoys their driving games.

Although helpful, I would probably add that you should never let anyone borrow the game, as you will never get it back!!!!
