Rewrite Sony
Review of Sony DRX 510ULK by CrisisWolf

Advantages: Fast, Good Software, External
Disadvantages: External Power Needed, Sony Software

I already have a built in DVD, I already have a built in CD-RW. I couldn't resist getting a DVD-RW. I've had it a fairly long time now, I havn't had any problems with it at all. Looks wise its not the best, it doesn't match my black dell very nice cause its a cream colour but thats not a problem its what it does that counts. It comes with loads of software, such as Sonic MyDVD and RecordNow. I've made 100s of DVDs using it, had about 2 or 3 fail ...
...CDs is unbelivably fast. I can make a full 80mins music CD in about 2mins burning time. Its fantastic. As for the external side of things. It comes with long enough cables to suit your needs, but nothing ridiculously long to add to the wires I already have everywhere. I turn it on as and when needed, it has the on light on the front for the times when I forget to turn it off. Its completly silent when its on, and when its burning or reading a disc ... Read review

Oh to get it right first time!
Review of Sony DRU 510A by colinmilne

Advantages: Great name for badge snobs
Disadvantages: Expensive with too many rough edges

...It seemed to me that Sony rushed this DVD unit to the market in order to be one of the very first with a multi-format drive. There were certainly rough edges right from the start. The main problems were with authoring DVD disks when the unit would start cutting and for reasons unknown would then find some error and eject the disk. Goodbye blank disk, hello another coaster. There was no real pattern to this and it would happen with a number of different ...
...one. That's not to say that every Sony drive is like this - far from it - the newer models appear to work well and their prices are quite competitive. They've even dropped the quirky looks of the 510A. But as for my one, its the thumbs down I'm afraid. ... Read review

Sony me up, not Down!
Review of Sony DRX 500UL by Tortenmann

Advantages: very small, fast, nice, anaesthetic wise, fast DVD+RW speeds
Disadvantages: USB data handling not too fast, good enought though

♦How I acquired this impressive product ♦ Well, seeing as I do a great deal of video editing, I needed to backup my computer in the case of data loss or due to reformatting my hard drive, loosing all my valuable data, as I also run windows 2000, so that explains the problems with the computer anyway. I already had a CD+RW for my computer, but this one was internal, so I had the problem of carrying it around, well, I couldn’t really, ...
...all my date on to. I wanted a DVD±RW as well so that I could backup large amounts of date, not necessarily very quickly, but at least I could store large videos without splitting them all up. I also wanted to record DVDs for friends and family, legally, that is, by the way. So I looked around for a DVD±RW that was not only external, but also worth the amount of money that I was willing to fork out for it, £200-£300, so I wanted something that would ... Read review

Pioneering price for an antique DVD
Review of Pioneer DVR-212D by suddenend

Advantages: Very, very cheap; SATA; Fast; Reads/Writes most DVD formats
Disadvantages: Only comes in beige; No DVD-RAM writing (Read Only)

...REVIEW I bought my Pioneer DVR-212D, a few days ago for just £11 inc. VAT, BRAND NEW, from eBuyer.com. I hope you agree that's an incredible price for a S-ATA DVD rewriter. I only really needed the Pioneer drive to aid in testing the functionality of another more current P-ATA DVD-RW drive that was exhibiting some very odd behaviour that I wasn't absolutely certain was the drive's fault, so I wasn't too fussy about it being highly specified. Having ...
...the drive vertically. Being Pioneer I imagine longevity is a given, at least here in my household they have an enviable reputation for reliability. I have never managed to break anything I have bought from them in the past. It doesn't seem to matter what quality of disc you present it with either, it just accepts any old tat. Even the really nasty 8x reject DVDs my local computer emporium tries to pass of as quality gear work in this drive, a welcome ... Read review

Freecome DVD RW Recorder USB 2.0
Review of Freecom DVD RW Recorder LS USB 2.0 by RMcCartyhy

Advantages: ummmmm
Disadvantages: Doesn't work very well, slow, intermitently recognises disks, poor back up service, need I go on?

I ordered my Freecom DVD Recorder LS USB 2.0 after my CD/DVD drive packed up on my 15 month old HP Desktop. I wanted it mainly to load CD ROM and burn DVD's from movies already converted to DVD format on my hard drive. Being that my PC had no disk drive I relied upon this external drive to load the bundled DVD burning software (Roxio 9). This took several days and many attempts. Then I tried burning my first DVD. After taking 3 hours to do a task ... Read review
