Goodbye floppy disks - hello Zippy!
Advantages: Easy and quick to copy and delete files Disadvantages: Lots of other gadgets now on the market
The Iomega 250Mb internal Zip drive has been around now for a few years. Many of you will be familiar with its predecessor, the 100Mb version which was a landmark piece of kit at the time.
So you spend your hard earned dosh and what do you get? Well first of all there are two main packages around. There's the retail version which comes complete with an ide cable, power supply adaptor cable, 5 1/4" adaptor housing, screws, one 250Mb disk and Iomega ... ...operating system fully recognises the Iomega 250Mb drive and really that's all there is to it. You can see it either by double clicking my computer or by selecting windows explorer. The software supplied by Iomega gives you some extra features not found by the operating system alone. These include drivers for older systems and extra programs for backups, copying, formatting etc. all done with nice simple layouts that are easy to follow. My own favourite ...

Old technology
Advantages: Hard wearing, faster than floppy disks Disadvantages: Small storage, Price, compatability
Well let me "try" and explain what a Zip Drive is. This plugs unto your USB port and looks like an external floppy disk drive, the actual disks are roughly the same dimension as a normal floppy disk, but a little thicker. The disks are well built and would be hard to damage. They are similar to floppy disks in that they have a shield which slides back when in the drive, so the disk is fully encased. Zip disks come in size variations of 25MB, 100MB ... ...disks cannot be shared with others unless they have a zip drive also or you carry your drive around with you.
POSSITIVES
Disks can be re-used again and again.
Has faster read-write time than Floppy drives
Disks are very sturdy, hard to damage.
Disk drive powered by USB, no adapted needed.
Unfortunately due to this now becoming an age of CD's and static memory, Zip technology is dead.
The main negatives to the zip drive are its competition:

The disc, the disc, the disc is on fire.........
Advantages: Has the light scribe facility, cheap, reliable - Great value for money Disadvantages: Not pleasing to the eye, fairly large and bulky, loud during the burning process
...up, so step up the LG GSA-E60L.
I primarily looked at this drive because of the low price. Whilst there were cheaper drives out there, I had never heard of such brands so I was quite skeptical. The drives could have been made in the same factory as the top brands and given an unknown label (I know many things are manufactured in this way), hence I could have got a bit of a bargain. Alternatively, the products could have been absolute rubbish. It ... ...Looks
The LG is black and understated, however it is not modern looking or sleek in any way. It is one of the larger, bulkier and uglier external drives I have seen, but all things considered this is forgivable, however if you are one of those people that put looks over functionality and practicality then this external drive is definitely not for you. When dealing with computer peripherals I always go for functionality and value for money over ...

decent product if you have some back ground knowledge
Advantages: Fast and reliable Disadvantages: Noisy and needs its own plug socket. Roxio is over complicated for personal use.
When i first opened my freecom dvd recorder i was impressed. it looked decent and very well put together. The installation went well even though it took longer than i had intailly hoped. When it comes to backing up your dvds and cd's the freecom does what you want it to do. It will not convert avi files to dvd format. I also found that the roxio program that comes with the freecom dvd recorder is not helpfull in its tutorial, the program seems over ... ...drive itself is worth having for these reasons; * Reliable and durable (yes i tested mine!) * Easy to set-up due to USB connections. * Fast The Freecom is a little loud and it does require its own plug socket (simular to mobile phone chargers in size). ...
