LiteOn Top dog for price & quality
Review of LiteOn Dvd940e by daveylee20

Advantages: Easy to use, reliable & its just Plug & Play
Disadvantages: May need a firmware upgrade, depending on what media you use.

Where can I start, everyone should have something like this. I mainly use this for backing up information when I’m out & about doing odd jobs for people or research into my next project. The speed, style & reliability of this was a main issue for me, it hit all the right buttons & works like a dream. It does everything a normal internal DVD-RW should do, except you can plug it into any pc/laptop with a USB 2.0 port and your away. The downsides ...
...upgrade the firmware to allow it to recognise some cheaper versions of DVD’s. Such as a version of DataWrite DVD-R’s that was manufactured as 8x DVD’s, but a technical issue prevented the Initial creation from being 8x but only 4x. Now, most DVD-R are mostly 8x now, but some 4x about still, and some of the higher tech DVD Writers will have issues with this. A firmware update makes the DVD Writer see the disk correctly & its correct capacity. Second ... Read review

Read, write and draw what more do you need?
Review of LiteOn SSM-85H5SX by dbirse

Advantages: Lightweight, small, portable and has lightsribe technology.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive £70, not the fastest drive around

...extra feature. It was the Liteon SSM-85H5SX. The added extra was the Lightscribe technology meaning I can design an image and then burn it onto the top side of a specially made disk. SPECIFICATIONS This is just a list of read, write and rewrite speeds. The complicated way to explain this is to say that the first CD drive read a 150 Kbps (kilobits per second) and this is X so 2X is 2 times as fast (300 kbps) as just X, 3X is 3 times as fast (450 ...
...nowadays we work in bytes, there are 8 bits in a byte so this means that to find out how long it should take to burn a full CD (700 megabytes) you find out how many kilobits you have (1024 KB = 1MB) and then diving it by your speed and that is how long in seconds you should be able to write at. Just remember though that you usually won't run at the maximum speed that is possible. I'm sorry if I lost you completely there but to put it simply, the ... Read review

Portable doesnt always mean mobile
Review of LiteOn SLW-831SX by Rubeenio

Advantages: Light, slim
Disadvantages: Needs external power :(

...baby is great. The LiteOn SLW-831SX is super slim and compact (about 15cm long, 13 cm wide and 2.5cm deep) due to the fact that it doesn't have a trap that comes out of the drive itself, it just uses a slot that you push the DVD or CD into and it then ejects out. Even though the SLW-831SX is slim it is also quite though and durable so if you're sitting at your table and you knock it off it won't break :) The SLW-831SX uses a USB2 connection that ...
...to worry about not being able to connect it to your computer (the USB2 cable comes with the drive so you don't have to go and buy it too) Now because it uses this USB2 connection is not as fast as say and IDE DVD RW that you would have in your PC but that not much of a problem because your paying for this drive to be external so it can be used anywhere (as long as there's a plug there lol) The drive writes at speeds of 8x (DVD-/+), 2.4x (DVD+R Dual ... Oh No! He's at it again
Review of LiteOn SOHW-832SX by Coloneljohn

Advantages: easy to install
Disadvantages: I havn't found any yet

...My eye lit on the Liteon SOHW-832S USB DVD r/rw drive. (Pun intended) Well DVD thingies are getting far more common these days and I did not have one. I have the usual CD drive and CD R/RW drives already. I wasn't feeling like a rebuild as I am getting lazy. As this was a USB thingy I thought that I might get it. Cost was £95. Now I do not know if this is expensive for these things or not. But the box did say it would take dual layer and I had read ...
...12. I already have other Liteon products installed on the machine. I can only plead old age. I found that the USB connector had come out of the back of the unit. It took me many minutes to figure that out. Once plugged in, bingo. All up and running ok. One thing I did notice, if you have other media players installed, this sets itself as default. You may want some other system set, real player or something else. I will let you sort that out, I am ... Read review

Pioneering price for an antique DVD
Review of Pioneer DVR-212D by suddenend

Advantages: Very, very cheap; SATA; Fast; Reads/Writes most DVD formats
Disadvantages: Only comes in beige; No DVD-RAM writing (Read Only)

...REVIEW I bought my Pioneer DVR-212D, a few days ago for just £11 inc. VAT, BRAND NEW, from eBuyer.com. I hope you agree that's an incredible price for a S-ATA DVD rewriter. I only really needed the Pioneer drive to aid in testing the functionality of another more current P-ATA DVD-RW drive that was exhibiting some very odd behaviour that I wasn't absolutely certain was the drive's fault, so I wasn't too fussy about it being highly specified. Having ...
...the drive vertically. Being Pioneer I imagine longevity is a given, at least here in my household they have an enviable reputation for reliability. I have never managed to break anything I have bought from them in the past. It doesn't seem to matter what quality of disc you present it with either, it just accepts any old tat. Even the really nasty 8x reject DVDs my local computer emporium tries to pass of as quality gear work in this drive, a welcome ... Read review
