Advantages: Good quality; quiet operation; very affordable Disadvantages: Rather high CPU usage
...the drive's cache size? The Samsung has only 256kB of cache (as opposed to the Plextor's 2MB).
DAE quality was rated "10" (perfect) with the "Accurate Stream" feature present.
CPU usage with CD-R dics was fairly good for a quality drive: 0% at 1x, 1% at 2x, 2% at 4x and 4% at 8x. CPU usage reading DVDs seemed staggeringly high at first glance: 6 % at 1x, 19 % at 2X, 47 % at 4X and 77 % at 8x reading a pressed DVD-ROM, and even higher with a burned ... ...% at 4x and "n/a" (out of range? ;-)) at 8X.
Then I measured CPU usage with the (generally acclaimed) Plextor drive: it was just as high.
Not being an expert in this field I can only speculate that during normal operation CPU usage won't be a problem; DVD film playback occurs at 1x; audio file playback off DVDs also doesn't require higher read speeds. Aside from file copying, the only circumstance I can think of where thed drive would have to provide ...
Advantages: Fast and reliable Disadvantages: Noisy and needs its own plug socket. Roxio is over complicated for personal use.
When i first opened my freecom dvd recorder i was impressed. it looked decent and very well put together. The installation went well even though it took longer than i had intailly hoped. When it comes to backing up your dvds and cd's the freecom does what you want it to do. It will not convert avi files to dvd format. I also found that the roxio program that comes with the freecom dvd recorder is not helpfull in its tutorial, the program seems over ... ...drive itself is worth having for these reasons; * Reliable and durable (yes i tested mine!) * Easy to set-up due to USB connections. * Fast The Freecom is a little loud and it does require its own plug socket (simular to mobile phone chargers in size). ...
Advantages: good shape it is attractive and it has good speeds Disadvantages: not compatible with all cd's
My drive came installed with the computer and It has worked fine. I was really under the impression that it was good quality. It's only when I wanted to install another hard drive on the same ide channel that I have encountered problems. it really good device it has a good and attractive shape and alarge features and the speed of it when it use as a cd is good 48x and 24x is very enough but in the case of dvd the speed is 4x and 8x which is not enough ... ...dvd's as it was burning, anything from movies to games, the scratch was always in exactly the same place, fine for some movies, but games useless they did not work. Decided to burn the game on maximum speed, burnt 3/4 of the way and stopped. Same spot that it was putting the scratch. Doesn't work anymore, not only won't it burn dvd's anymore, won't read anything either. Mind you this burner has had very little use in the 2 1/2 months that I have ...
Advantages: Stable and always works Disadvantages: None that I have come across
it works very well in any ms os including vista, i have used in on over 500 dvd's backing up data and the like dual layer is fast burning too only looking to replace this with black fascia or a bluray disk. I really bought it because on the 4-5 forums I checked, this product came out the least beaten (and as you may know, forum users a direct, if not blunt about even the smallest of problems). I have no experience how it performs under Microsoft ... ...almost three years (at least if my memory serves me correctly it is the same model of drive). In the time that I have used this drive it has never failed to burn correctly either on windows or under linux (ubuntu). It is always prudent to burn burn at a slower rate than the maximum, however at times, I have burned at maximum speed and never received errors. It is a good drive that you may not be able to buy new any more. ...
