Review of Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32 by paulbowes2k1

Advantages: Burn-Proof, Speed and reliability
Disadvantages: Warranty, Nothing else.

...nothing B 4 buying. Plextor have always had a good name in CD technology and are still going strong, "If your going 2 buy a writer don't rule Plextor out". Very easy 2 install "Out of the box and writing my first disc with-in 20 Mins" The writer speed is now only average but still fast (12speed ("U can buy 24 speed writers now" (24 speed MONEY??))). Warranty is a drawback as it is on-site if anything goes wrong it has 2 go back 2 Plextor Not 2 the ... Read review

Yamaha External SCSI CD-writer
Review of Yamaha CRW 4416SX by jthesing

Advantages: Robust, fairly quick
Disadvantages: Not very cheap

The Yamaha 4416 SX CD rewriter is a robust machine. I use it for about one year now, and I have not experienced many problems. The device is delivered with 3 writable CD's and 1 rewritable CD. The software is CeQuadrat WinOnCD. With this software you can do almost any job. While writing data on a CD you have to take care your computer is not busy doing memory consuming jobs. WinOnCD uses a memory buffer while writing data to the CD-writer, and if ...
...speed. If your computer has less than 16 MB memory you better try to write at 2-speed, or have a trial session at 4 speed first. The Yamaha makes quite a lot of noise. It is not the cheapest machine in it's kind, but it has a great quality. ... Read review

Exchange data with the Jaz drive
Review of Iomega Jaz 2GB by jthesing

Advantages: Fast, robust
Disadvantages: Expensive

The Iomega Jaz drive is a good solution for those who want to exchange dynamic data from one computer to another. The Jaz drive is a fairly quick device. It is not as fast as a harddisk, but certainly quicker than a tape or a CD-ROM. You can use a Jaz disk as a booting device, which gives you the opportunity to work with several operating systems. Do not use a Jaz-disk as a permanent storage device. The disks are quite expensive and need to be refreshed ...
...CD is much more suitable. But for dynamically exchanging data a Jaz-drive is very nice. Disadvantage of the Jaz is its noise. The disk rotates at high speed in the Jaz-player that makes a high rustling sound. If the Jaz is in its standby state it is sometimes not approachable. You have to eject and insert it again to get access to the data. Another disadvantage is its price. If you want to use a Jaz drive for permanent storage of data, you better ... Read review

DVD-RAM, Is it a Betamax in Sheeps clothing...
Review of Panasonic LF-D 103E by shearerm

Advantages: Gigantic storage capacity, long shelf life for stored disks
Disadvantages: Not cheap, bit slow sometimes.

...to the drive itself, the Panasonic LF-D103 is a little bit old now, alightly new model is available but I don’t think it boasts any major improvements. I can’t remember many problems with installation. The drive is a SCSI device (see my article on the Adaptec AVA 2904 SCSI controller to learn more about SCSI) and so only required connecting to my pc’s SCSI card. The software that came with it is pretty funny, as it has obviously ...
...(and Panasonic obviously didn’t feel like paying for a translator) but it does seem to work well. There are a couple of useful utilities as well as the essential disk formatting tools. One is for backing up your pc and the other is for copying DVD-RAMs, very useful as trying to cut and paste 9.4 Gb of data is not really an option. The drive does have a couple of odd features though. The drive will accept cds as well as DVD-RAM disks in cartridges ... Read review
