Very Cheap Good Quality DVD-RW
Review of Pioneer DVR 115DBK by
Massey42
Advantages: Cheap, Fast, Quite
Disadvantages: None
...decided to go for another Pioneer drive as I have used them in the past and had very few problems, although it was marginally more expensive than some of the others at £18!!
When it arrived the first thing I noticed was that it was the same size as a normal DVD drive, over an inch shorter than my previous one. I'm not aware if all new drives are this size but it may be a consideration if you have a smaller case and are short of room. As I'm using ... ...jumper on the back to slave mode so that the computer would detect it properly. This was easily done which a clear set of instructions provided (once you find the right language!), the jumper was also quite easy to get hold of and pliers weren't necessary as I normally find they are.
Once plugged in I turned the computer on and windows detected it no problem and installed the correct drivers within seconds, after restarting it was ready to go. As ...

So Eager To Please, It Will Accept Anything
Review of Freecom DVD RW Recorder LS USB 2.0 by
sghawken
Advantages: Easy to install, easy to use.
Disadvantages: The bulky plug
...world where I found this Freecom model priced at £49.99. There was not a great deal of choice in PC world having three different recorders to choose from, two of them were out of the question simply because they were in the + format which I tend to find less reliable.
Having bought the recorder and taken it home I found the contents self explanatory The DVD Recorder, a leaflet of instruction, a disc, USB lead and a power cable (annoyingly like other ... ...drivers to work with the Freecom product. This can I add is a nice touch, as with many external disc drives you need to use a disc before installation, as my drive had gone to that drivebay in the sky this was impossible. The disc however includes DVD burning software this is of the ULead brand.
The writer needs top connect via a USB 2.0 port (so make sure you have one prior to making a purchase, you can check by doing a diagnostic via your PC’s ...

Very Poor.
Review of LG GSA H55N Super-Multi by
stiffy249
Advantages: Dual Layer
Disadvantages: Slow loading Vista with setup screen and overall poor
I really dont like these LG Drives.
I will explain why
They are so slow
I loaded vista on one of my pcs and it took ages to even get though the setup screens.
Its quite fast burning dvds however i have notice that the NEC Drives are alot faster in both loading software, vista and doing cds and dvds.
I am quite disapoinent with these as i brought serveral and the performance is naff.
I would recommend using a NEC Drive or one simular.
Big disapointment.
... ...findings. The cd on the LG (This one was behind 1 and half cds than the philiips which was roughly 8 mins difference it was that bad!
DVD Wise The Philips finished 5mins before this LG Drive did.
Both machines were the same specification and the same media player burner media player 11 with windows vista!
So there you have it a performance match where this drive failed big time.
Sorry.. ...

LG GSA H42N Super-Multi Review
Review of LG GSA H42N Super-Multi by
plunt
Advantages: Very Cheap, Changeable cover panels, Fast Speed
Disadvantages: No firmware, Region Locked, Major issues with burning regular cd's
...and thus bought it as LG has become more reputable.
The Pros
This drive was very easy to install. It was practically a plug and play drive. It also came with different front panels in order to change colors from black and white. Although this may seem pointless it is a factor to take into consideration if you are after certain specification like color for your computer. The drive has never had a problem playing any cd's DVD's and etc. It ... ...this drive as it seems LG has forgotten about this drive and moved on.
3) This final problem is the killer part of this drive and the reason it is ranked so low. When durng xvid files and various other files onto a CD to watch on an xvid player and part of the files which are over 350 mb will not work. Thus typically TV shows are 350 mbs and meaning half the disc is wasted. Despite the cheap prices of CD's these days it still is a waste. Conclusion ...
