The Yamaha Stage custom is a very well built kit, which equally sounds and looks fantastic. To the advantage of the customer it ranges at a price a lot lower than your average Yamaha drum kit but still is of the original Yamaha quality. Once with good quality heads have been fixed that’s when you can really get the sound out of them, which you bought it for. The type of sound, which you get with the original heads, is more of a jazz sound, but as your average rocker I prefer the deeper sounds, which come from Remo Pinstripe heads. ...speaks quite highly for the Yamaha DTX range that a discontinued second hand product I bought for £250 off ebay is quite simply, a great model for alot of user groups. Yamaha DTX drums are cheaper than rolands, their current entry level model being sold at about £450 pounds as a 5 piece. Compared to Rolands entry level which is £600 for a 4 piece. You might not get all the fancy items as the Roland but that doesn't make the DTX series any less ...

...go check out the newest Yamaha kit I could find at my local drum shop and do some comparisons -vs- the Collector Series from DW. Price wise there is no real comparison with the Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau kit in the same sizes coming in at about 30% less retail than the DW's. Yamaha definitely wins in this column. Advantages: Great Tom Sound..Easy to tune
Disadvantages: Bass Drums need a Front resonant head with a smaller port

...bass drum suffers with the Yamaha front resonant head with the large hole in the middle.I think when i replace this with another head with a small port the bass drum will have more depth Overall these are great drums but the Bass drums need to be worked over to get them to the standard comprable to the toms which are arguably the best you can buy. ... I own a Pearl Export ELX Standard size kit and what can I say except WOW !!! I have had various kits, ok lets look back at what I had before the Pearl ELX. I had, a Simmons Electronic kit, great for that heavy 80's disco vibe. A Yamaha DTX V.2, verry cool for chruch and so on, but no real drummer plays on electronic kits. I then bought a Gretsch Catalina Birch, fusion, great kit, but it allways lacked something. I then bought a Sonor Force 2003, ...
...an add of a second Pearl ELX, for R3000, roughly about a 187 pounds and what a great great kit. I put on some Evans EC2 heads and I got the best sound I have ever had from any of my own kits. Keep in mind I have been drumming for 15 yrs and I am session drummer, however the Pearl ELX Export was the best, cheapest investment I have ever made.
