Following on from the huge success of Jez Alborough's Duck in the Truck and Fix-it Duck , ... more
the irrepressible Duck returns for further adventures in Captain Duck. Duck has run out of petrol for his truck (a rather snazzy red number, incidentally) and decides to call on his friend Goat, who always has a supply of fuel and who surely wouldn't mind if he "borrowed" some? Duck's beady gaze falls upon Frog and Sheep preparing to set off on a pleasure trip with Goat in his motor boat. Like Toad in The Wind in the Willows, Duck is immediately convinced that this is "the only way to travel" and loses all interest in his beloved truck! While Goat's back is turned, Duck commandeers the boat, appointing himself as Captain (complete with jaunty nautical cap, naturally) and speeds off with his reluctant crew. Of course, chaos ensues, with the friends getting washed out to sea and Duck discovering that he's a landlubber after all. There's also a subtle moral message in Duck's come-uppance as a reminder to ask before taking anything! Written entirely in rhyming couplets that beg to be read aloud, Captain Duck is a humorous romp enhanced by Alborough's colourful and lively illustrations. Ages 3-7 years.--Alison Drury.

Jez Alborough has a talent for telling a tall tale or two; in Fix-it Duck he surpasses ... more
himself. Enter one rather ridiculous--and, frankly, not very bright--duck on a mission to fix a leaky roof. What follows is a gloriously farcical farmyard adventure that will have tots and adults giggling merrily.Fabulously bright, detailed illustrations capture the mood of the humourous text beautifully, making this divinely comic picture book for the very young an absolute must-read for everyone who has ever tried their hand at a little DIY. ~~~ THE AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR ~~~
Jez Alborough was born in 1959. His first book, Bare Bear, was published in 1985 and it was a runner up in The Mother Goose Book Award. He has written and illustrated over 30 books to date and these include Cuddly Dudley and Where’s my teddy?

These include a sheep in a jeep, a goat in a motorboat, and a frog. We first met ‘Duck in the Truck’ when my son was about 3 months old. I had never enjoyed reading as a child, I was always the one who was asked by the teacher why I hadn’t read for two weeks. My husband is also a reluctant reader and I was determined that my son would be encouraged to appreciate books. So, aged 6 weeks, he enrolled at the local library. I was intending to get his books on my card but the librarian assured me it was better that he had his own card as the late fees are a lot cheaper! Since then we have been attending the library regularly to get books to read.
I had heard of Jez Alborough from my days as a teacher but wasn’t sure exactly what he had written. That soon changed, as our family have become huge fans. We initially borrowed ‘Duck in the Truck’ from the library and closely followed that by others in the Duck series by Jez Alborough. We love the stories so much we have to admit we bought our own copies!

~~~ THE BOOK ~~~ First published in 1999 and written in rhyme, the book tells the tale of a duck in a truck that his a rock and got stuck in the muck. You can get the book in hard back but I have the paperback edition. It comes with great reviews including :
‘Alborough’s pictures are addictive, combining graphic simplicity with painterly qualities… Duck in the Truck is a picture book where rhyme, illustration, wit and inventiveness combine to produce outstanding quality’, TES Primary.
~~~ AGE BOOK APPEALS TO ~~~
It takes just a few minutes to read through the book and certainly, at 6 weeks old, that’s all you do. My son loves the rhythm of the story which can be lost if you ponder to do the, “Where’s the sheep” thing. This however is an important aspect of reading with toddlers and, once the child is ready, time should be given to do this, especially as the illustrations are so beautiful. I would however recommend that you read it all through and then go back so the literary elements are not lost.
~~~ PUBLISHING DETAILS ~~~ It is currently published by Picture Lions, which is the children’s division of HarperCollins Publishing Ltd. The current price for the paperback edition is £4.99. Amazon do provide some of Jez Alborough’s books at reduced prices although they tend not to reduce some of them. Other books in the series include: Fix it Duck and Duck’s Keys and Captain Duck.
Advantages: Lovely easy reading book with, good size text and great illustrations. Disadvantages: It's part of a series so expect to be asked to buy the other stories :-)
DUCK in the TRUCK is a lovely children's story book hugely enjoyed by daughter we often share this book together at bedtimes. It takes about 3-4 minutes to read at a slow pace with your child with the adult reading. I have the book in paper back the cover is bright and colourful and it's glossy. ******* The Story ******* Duck sets of on a journey in his red truck, along his journey he gets stuck in the muck. Duck can't move the truck on his own so ... ...stuck and then each try to help. As the story goes on the number or animals, helping to push the truck, gets bigger and in the end it takes the duck, a frog, a sheep and a goat all to push to get Ducks truck unstuck!. Duck's truck is out of the muck off he drives leaving all the animals stuck! ******Its appeal****** This is a really fun book as the sentences rhyme so children who can't yet ready are still able to join in with story. Advantages: Great illustrations Disadvantages: Some may not like the way that the story is largely told through illustrations
of discussion and to some extent shows that it's not always bad to be small or the smallest!
This is a lovely book but not for adults who are slightly averse to telling the story in their own words. Great illustrations and a firm favourite with very young children due to it's simplicity.
As anyone who has read any of my recent reviews will have noticed, I have a passion for books. I think one of the most important and worthwhile things a parent can do, is read to their children.
In my opinion, it gives them an appreciation of the written word, encourages them to learn, and helps to develop the bond between parent and child.
My latest reviews have been dedicated to children's books, as I wanted to share some of my children's favourites, and pass on recommendations to other parents.
I buy lots of Walker Book publications, and HUG is one that I purchased in a set with several others.
HUG is written and illustrated by JezAlborough.He has written other books such as Duckin the Truck and Duck's Day Out. I have not read any of his other books, so I cannot say how Hug compares.
