People say that you should pursuit your life ambition and I have taken this into account as I am only 13 Ii have plenty of time to think in what I choose to do in the future. I eventually decided that I would like to be a C++ programmer and there's no better time to start learning than as a child so I went and bought this book……C++ for dummies by Stephen Randy Davis.

-*-*- What is C++?? -*-*-

Computers are stupid things they only do specific instructions in their own language (C#) it took us humans a long time to master that and so very clever people came up with the idea that they add a bit of human language into the computer language so they are both recognise each other and so came the language of C++

-*-*- What can you do with C++??? -*-*-

C++ gives you a lot of power over the computer you can change around programs (but you need to be a little bit of a hacker as well) C++ also gives you the power to write games and software programs but as with all languages C++ is a hard one to learn.

-*-*- This is where the book comes in… -*-*-

So now you know a little bit of the history of C++ and what it gives you the power to do but the main part is learning the language. As I am only young I can't exactly go into univercity and do a degree so I used the next best thing books. I had known about the dummies books for a long time as they helped me to lean BASIC and HTML (they are other languages) so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed although it was a bit expensive $32.00 (I was in America when I bought it.) that is equivalent to about 16 pound. The book is very thick and also comes with a C++ compiler (this allows you to build your own programs) which made things easier.

*-*-* The book itself *-*-*

As I looked at the book it states on the back that you can create your first C++ program by the end of the first chapter and it doesn't lie but it's not exactly a worldwide selling program that you will make millions out of the program shows you how to convert temperature Celsius to farenheight but as you read on it gets more involved. The author has also gone a bit off track I will explain what I mean…. At the front of the book it explains itself like dummies for example he says that "to read this book you read the page then turn over like any other book…" okay now that is for dummies but as he continues writing he forgets that he is writing to dummies and goes into more complicated words like MS-DOS a lot of people don't know what DOS is….

*-*-* Does the book work? *-*-*

All in all I would say yes the book does work because it does show you the basics of C++ and it shows you key things you need to get going but if you are going to buy this book bear in mind it does not teach you how to create a game or program that will make you millions and you will retire at the age of 21. The most difficult thing it shows how to make is an accountant program.
*-*-* Conclusion *-*-*

I think this is a great book if you just want the basics and then buy another book with the more advanced stuff. This book is also good because it gives you examples of programs and what each line, string is used for it also helps because there are little cartoons that help you relax I say relax I mean more comfortable as in you don't have to keep working if you know what I mean……. But for the money it is a great buy and I recommend it.

An easy to read and informative review, not sure I'd want to plough through it though, remember a friend of mine had this and I went through the first chapter and remember the program you mentioned. Very good review. Ellie.

Nice easy to read review there, I think most people with a computer have got one of these books in the house ( we have ) and they are very helpful indeed......Roy

A great review, a pleasure to read. Don't ever give up on your desire to be a C++ programmer. When I was (ok that makes me sound old!?!!?) 13 I decided I wanted to be a Pharmacologist. I've just finished my undergraduate degree in Pharmacology and I'm embarking on a PhD now. Your hard work will pay off and believe me it's the best feeling knowing that you've achieved it after nearly a decade of learning. Good luck!
