as the saviour, the Messiah, a male Bene Gesserit with super human powers. Paul knows the value placed on the spice (it is their currency, their livelihood, their very existence) yet with that very knowledge, he also knows, the only way forward is to stop the spice trade. In my opinion, if you have never read the book, Dune, by FrankHerbert, then you can't really call yourself a SciFi reader. Whether you like it or not, that's another matter, and a matter of taste. But you should have at least tried to read it, because I believe Dune is the epitome of philosophy ...
Advantages: Scope, detail, characters, worms, spice! Disadvantages: I really can't think of any
I first read Dune back in 1985 mainly because there was a big movie of the book coming out. Since then I've read it a number of times and I think it's probably my favourite novel.
The book can be read on many levels. I find myself enjoying it for two reasons. First of all it's a great adventure story with Paul and his mother on the run from the evil Harkonnens across the strange desert world. Secondly I read it for the unique universe Herbert created. The details fly off the page. The descriptions of the Great Houses, the Sisterhood, the Guild are totally convincing. And the little details such as the workings of a stillsuit add more layers.
If you've not read it then give it a chance. If you have read it then read it again! ...
