When my trusty Electrolux refused to pick up the dirt and grime on the carpets any more I found myself in a bit of a quandary. Having been put off the Dyson due to reports of them having a life span similar to an amoeba I wasn't too sure if a Dyson was going to last the course. Also 3 years previously an over zealous sales man put me completely off buying one due ot the sale patter of " they'll get your house, hospital clean madam" As I have great experience of hospital standards of cleanliness I gave the Dyson a wide berth!

So here I was with carpets that screamed CLEAN ME and Curry's was awash with Dysons after 10 minutes of erming I decided that the Dyson was perhaps the one for me. What sold it was the fact they have a long hose. Basically you can clean the stairs without having to balance the vacuum cleaner precariously on a step half way up to finish the job. I soon found myself the proud owner of a DC07SY - the SY standing for silver and yellow!

James Dyson, the creator of Dyson vacuum cleaners studied Design at the Royal College of Art. In the late 70's and early 80's he created the prototype that was to become the Dyson Vacuum cleaner we know today. In 1993 the first Dyson was launched with technology that could pick up the smallest of particles in a new bagless approach to hoovering! James Dyson created a dual cyclone process in his earlier models which meant an end to cleaners with bags.It was no wonder that the Dyson soon became the best selling vacuum cleaner, with clever marketing and relative affordability the Dyson soon became the cleaner to have.

The Dyson DC07 was first produced in 2001, with this new model James Dyson perfected a new cyclone procedure the Root cyclone. Basically this was an update on the Dual cyclone technology that made for even more powerful sucking, by creating a group of 8 smaller chambers.

Specifications:

The Dyson DC07SY ( to be known as the DC07 from now on) is an upright cleaner - gone are the days where I'll do my back in scrubbing away with a cylinder vacuum cleaner. Standing at some 1127mm tall this cleaner is actually ideal for me as I used to find with my other upright cleaner that I tended to stoop a little bit whilst cleaning. One down side of the DC07 is the fact that it is on the heavy side, it weighs in at a rather hefty 8kgs. I can imagine an elderly person might find using it rather cumbersome and tiring. The dust cylinder holds some 4 litres of dirt - basically I can clean my 3 bed roomed house all over on a weekly basis and the cylinder needs emptying every month -so it does hold rather a lot of dirt and dust! With a cord that spans some 8.35 metres in length this means you can go from room to room in my house without having to unplug it too often. Dyson do not quote the motor speed as other companies do in wattage ie a 1000 watts motor they like to quote the power in air watts or suction power -the DC07 has an air wattage of 300 which compares most favourably with the other available Dysons. The extension hose which was the main selling point for me spans some 13 metres and yes I can get it to reach the top of my stairs! It comes with 3 standard tools - the stair brush, the crevice pipe and a larger brush.

The many features of the Dyson DC07 include:

Root Cyclone technology - as discussed earlier this makes for a very powerful sucking experience. With the Root cyclone this should mean not only a powerful suction but a continuous suction.

Easier emptying - with an easy click system the dust cannister is easy to remove from the body of the cleaner. Then with a quick pull of the plunger the bottom of the box empties not unlike a trap door process.

Easier Stair cleaning - again with a quick press of a switch you are able to remove the wand -Dyson's name for the handle and along with it comes the inbuilt hose. This is able ot stretch over 6 times in size thus making for a more easier stair cleaning experience.

Auto carpet height adjustment - this nifty little feature means that instead of you fiddling with a knob to adjust the height of the brushes the DC07 does it all by it's self!

Motorized Brush bar - this feature is common in all upright Dysons. Basically it means that the brushes move around and sweep all dust and fibres trapped in your carpets into the constant airflow the Dyson omits.

Blockage removal ports - with ease of access to most parts of the DC07 this means that any blockages are soon sorted out.

My Experience

I bought my Dyson in May 2003 for £189.99 from Curry's I'm sure if I had shopped around I could have got it cheaper but given the fact I was in dire need for a vacuum cleaner at the time I didn't. having done a comparsion search online the best price I have found is £159.99 from www.electricwarehouse.co.uk .The DC07 comes in a rather large box. On opening said box I was greeted by a ray of items and instruction manuals. After studying the instruction manual I finally managed to fit the DC07 together and insert the array of tools into a variety of orifices the DC07 has for their storage. However I'm still not too sure if I fitted them in the correct places but as long as they stay put I'm not too worried!

The first thing I noticed that the DC07 is definitely a beast of a machine, with it's 8kgs of weight it is rather an unwieldy beast and the fact that the powerful suction practically lifted the hall carpets off the ground wasn't lost on me. Along with it's chunkiness and weight the Dyson is very cumbersome to use. At first I found that it really did help develope forearm muscles as I did battle with it, as it attempted to suck up the carpets, rugs, small children and any thing that got in it's way! With subsequent usage I've found that either I'd tamed the beast or I've just got used to the weight and power.

With it's powerful suction, as the saying goes nothing sucks quite like a Dyson, the cleaning effect is pretty amazing. Within seconds you'll see dirt, dust and any other objects that have got in the way of the powerful suction floating around in the clear dust cylinder. It also has the ability to clean right up to the edges of the skirting boards without the need of using any of the specialist cleaning attachments.

When it comes to cleaning stairs a job I have previously loathed with a passion this little beast comes into it's own as the hose really does stretch all the way to the top of the stairs in my house! Even with the hose fully stretched none of the DC07's powerful suction is lost.

As with most vacuum cleaners I tend to find myself playing hunt the blockage. Living with a 6 year old means that unfortunately little bits of her junk tend to get sucked up the vacuum cleaner whilst cleaning. Now Dyson actually market the DC07 as a cleaner that is easy to unblock. Unfortunately I'd have to disagree here! The blockage freeing portals are not that simple to unlock and I found that the first time I attempted to remove a blockage I struggled to reassemble the DC07 after having sorted out the blockage.

Pro's

In it's favour the DC07 cleans remarkably well, stairs are a joy to clean well not exactly a joy just not the chore they were with my previous vacuum cleaner, the dust cannister holds a mighty 4 litres of dust so you do not have to empty it every five minutes.

Con's

The weight of this beast would probably make it difficult for the elderly to use. It is also very cumbersome at times due to it's weight and chunkiness. The cord may well be over 8 metres long but it's a pain to rewind it an auto wind facility would be good. Blockages are also a pain to sort out due to the fact parts do not slot easily back into place. The DC07 is by no means a cheap vacuum cleaner.

Other models in the DC07 range include an Allergy cleaner, Allergy plus, Animal and All floors

If I was looking for another vacuum cleaner in all honesty I would go for a Dyson DC07 again due to the fact that it really does have a powerful suction and thus cleans remarkably well. it might not be the cheapest baby on the market but having experienced for many years cheaper vacuum cleaners I'm amazed at the results the DC07 gives.

With thanks to my title writer, who for some reason would like to remain anonymous.

I nearly fainted when I first ever used a Dyson. I am currently on my third one, but I have yet to NOT get a blockage....... I spend more time looking down a tube and swearing, ;o) Excellent review. x
