I have a small home so when I needed a new vacuum cleaner I chose the Dyson DC24 which is a smaller version of the standard model. It cost £189.99. I was expecting almost a child sized vacuum cleaner but there is not really much difference at all.
It was so simple to put together, there are peel off stickers on the unit to explain things as you go. It only took me 5 minutes to have it assembled. The ball makes vacuuming effortless, and the head of the vacuum is narrow so its easy to get under the sofa, low tables, etc.
It has strong suction as you would expect from a Dyson but it is surprising how full the cylinder is when you have finished. It really gets everything up. This does mean however that you need to empty the dust cylinder quite frequently.
The power cable is short and not retractable which can look a bit untidy if it is not being stored in a cupboard as you have to wind it around the handle, and it would have been nice to have somewhere on the Dyson to clip the small brush attachment as it has to be put away separately and could end up getting lost.
The cleaner weighs only 5.2 kilos, additional special features are patented Root Cyclone technology that doesn't lose suction as you vacuum; and clean exhaust air. The air expelled from a Dyson has up to 150 times less mould and bactreia than the air you breathe.
The plastic looks and feels relatively durable, I'm sure if you were heavy handed enough with it you could end up snapping something though, especially the clear plastic handle you hold when using the hose function.
I have found that you have to actually carry the unit when using the hose, unless you are vacuuming a stationary piece of furniture, for example your sofa. The hose is no way near strong enough for you to pull the cleaner behind you as you go.
The noise level is about medium. Not so noisy it drowns out the doorbell or telephone, but noisy enough to frighten your cat.
I have discovered conflicting information about the washable filters. The leaflet I found in the box(which is not part of the instruction manual) says you should wash the filters monthly to keep the unit working at maximum capacity, however the instruction manual mentions washing them every three months which is confusing. I suppose it depends how often you hoover?
The washable filters do have a lifetime guarantee and the vacuum cleaner comes with a five year guarantee.
