After 3 years of loyal service my old DC07 gave up despite the whole Dyson range being very repairable my wife and I decided to replace it with the DC14. This is one of the latest Dyson models and we choose the basic version. The price we paid was £180 meaning that although the Dyson is not cheap it's not the most expensive one around Arriving in one large box the Vacuum requires some assembly but this is simple and done in a matter of minutes. As with most vacuums it comes supplied with the basic attachments (crevice, dusting and upholstery) storage for which is on the
vacuum itself, unlike the DC07 the attachments actually fit to the machine and it's clear that some thought has gone into them, they are more secure and do not fall off every 10 minutes. The DC14 is lighter that the DC07, one web site lists the weight as 8.40kg, the same web site lists a DC07
Brush as being 8.83kg so there is a weight difference. Unlike is predecessor the DC14 is easier to use in every day life and no longer feels like you're pushing it, more it pulling you along. My wife is able to carry this hover up stairs something that she could not with the DC07.
Root 8 Cyclone technology ensures suction is not lost on this model and it shows especially the first few times that you use the vacuum, it will find dust you did not know you had. Though please make sure your carpets are fitted correctly as you will see the vacuum try to lift the carpet! On the technical side of thing the specs have been lowered compared to the DC07 but they are not significant enough to either notice or bother you.
Improvements made to the vacuum include: An improved telescopic reach I've heard a lot of people slate this feature, although a little tricky to get used to at first it is a very useful feature and one that I now could not live without. As already mentioned, the attachments are attached in a more secure way, thus making them a lot easier to use. Although dust
capacity has been reduced the way in which it is emptied has been improved by means of a button. Once the
cylinder has been removed from the main unit, it is held above a bin or rubbish bag and a trapdoor at the bottom of the cylinder is opened allowing for great control of dust. Again the feature is slightly difficult to get used to at first but gets better the more you do it! This will allow better control of dust if like me you have asthma suffers in the house. The improved design of the cylinder does however have one disadvantage; it makes the cylinder harder to clean than previous models. There is a HEPA model available we however chose not to buy this feature on the basis that the DC07 we owned did not have HEPA filters and did a superb job, the DC14 does an even better job.
The noise that this vacuum makes is also a drawback it can easily drown out T.V/radio/kids screaming, this I think is a problem with all
Dyson models and shouldn't really bother anyone but if noise is a factor it's certainly one to avoid. I have not had to change the belt on this model yet but as with all Dyson's no doubt it will.
This is a really good vacuum and does everything it needs to with extra tools for different jobs available from places such as
ARGOS. Although it has some drawbacks the are far fewer than the benefits this vacuum provides although many people may be put off by it high price I believe that it is a price worth paying because similar vacuums are available for less but Dyson's build quality is superior and I feel that a vacuum is an important purchase and addition to the house we use ours on a daily basis and so far have had no problems.
