I bought the Dyson, as I wanted a vacuum cleaner, which was capable of coping with cathair removal and also had a high filtration level for asthma sufferers.
Each DC-14 is colour coded to the special facilities it offers.
I have the steel gray and purple version, which has the Hepa filter, extra pet hairmini turbine head, adjustable brush for carpets and tiles plus the standard tools.
The standard model is yellow and gray, and does not have the adjustable brush. It is suitable only for carpets, not for tiles.
GOOD
POINTS For standard use, it is very effective on carpets, and it is shocking at first on how much dirt has been picked up. It does perform much better than my old vacuumcleaner.
The clear dirt collection section, which allows you to see how much dirt has been collected, may seem gimmicky at first, but is a good way of making sure that the unit is emptied when necessary.
Even though the dyson feels heavy at first, once switched on it glides easily and swiftly over the carpet, and brings the pile up beautifully. The weight of the unit actually helps with the cleaning, as the dyson does the hard work and keeps the downward force and suction while the user merely has to guide the dyson around. It is actually very light when the suction is working, and can be pushed by a small child when being used.
The large wheels make moving the dyson around simple, and they do not catch on the cable, which can sometimes get in the way. It also improves the gliding ability and maneuverability.
The storage arrangements for the hose and tools are very neat and tidy, and make good use of the design of the unit. The metal hose slides neatly into the flexible hose, and clicks into the main handle area. It is also very easy to get the hose ready for use, simply by unclipping the main unit handle and fitting the desired tool.
The pet hair mini turbine head is an additional extra available on some models, and can also be purchased separately if necessary. When used with the hose, it is very effective at cleaning small areas. It can deal with different surfaces, as it has an adjustable mini brush. When used on an area of dusty neglected carpet, it removed the dirt and brought the pile back up, improving the overall appearance. It can be cumbersome when used with the hose, but the end effect is worth it.
BAD POINTS It isn't very good at getting to the edges of carpets, next to the skirting board, and I have to use the hose attachment to make sure all the carpet has been vacuumed.
Also it does not have a release mechanism for the base to drop down, it has to be pushed down with your foot when ready to use, which can be disconcerting at first, as I wasn't sure if I was going to break it.
The instruction manual isn't very detailed, and I felt left a lot to be guessed, which isn't very reassuring as a new user. I had to guess about some of the instructions, or work out for myself how to fit or to learn how to use the dyson properly.
The hose has been designed to be used when cleaning stairs, but there are many times when it is necessary to use the hose and nozzle while vacuuming flat carpet. The hose and nozzle can be quite difficult to maneuver when using.
The cable is not retractable, and can get in the way when vacuuming, and is very long. The entire cable must be unwound before using, and no consideration has been given regarding holding the spare cable and using the dyson at the same time.
I have a toddler, who is able to tip the dyson over, which isn't very safe. It is a heavy unit, and can give quite a clout when landing. A bit top heavy, I would recommend making sure you have a good secure place to store it when not in use.
OVERALL RATING Though I have mentioned the faults with the dyson, they are minor nuisances, as the benefits and performance of the machine more than make up for any minor niggles.
I would recommend the DC-14, but I would state that it is better to go for any of the slightly more expensive model, rather than the basic yellow/gray model. The reason being is that the basic model can only cope with carpets, and does not have any extras, nor can it cope with tiled areas.
I have the added security of the Hepa filter, for the asthma sufferers in my family, but even the basic model has been approved for asthma sufferers.
I bought this model as a long-term investment. I expect the dyson to perform well for many years, and first impressions have only confirmed this belief.
The cost is quite reasonable, and after using the dyson for two weeks, it’s performance does justify the cost.
I hope this review has been of use to you.

Very informative review. I prefer bags and therefore have a Sebo which is about £40 cheaper than your Dyson. Dyson would be good if the quality is better. Having gone through 3 Dysons I dont intend to get another. By the way there is only 3 models on the market, upright in design which is cyclonic and has an auto cord feature (Panasonic, Bosch & Vax but all models are cumbersome to use as a result)- they are not that common on uprights because the mechanisms weaken and compared to a cylinder the cord and motor takes up a lot of space.
