After 5 years of faithful service cleaning up after two large dogs, one cat, one husband and one baby/toddler my DC07 all floors hoover had given up the ghost (or at least the ability to clean up all those hairs).
This time due to the number of pets in the house I decided to spend the extra money on the "Animal" version of the DC14 hoover. Usually this carries a premium of 40-50 pounds over the standard version but for this extra money you get:
mini turbine head, essential for stairs and soft furnishings with pets hepa filter to help filter out all those allergens associated with said pets.
Having looked in the shops and seen the dyson Animal for approximately 280 pounds I decided to shop around online for a better price. I finally found this at LX direct for £189 including free car cleaning kit (worth £30). If you are planning to buy this hoover look frequently online, the cheapest online price does seem to vary between the sites ( the week before LX direct had the same hoover priced at £250).
So what do you get for your money?
the DC14 is 7 times more powerful than the previous DC07 and this really showed in the amount of hair that the hoover picked up in comparison to my old version.
You now get a free manufacturer's 5 year guarantee. This will come in handy as with my previous model we did need to buy some replacement parts within the 5 years that we had it. (you just need to register online)
The wand is much easier to use. Instead of having to completely unclip it turn it 180 degrees and reclip it in order to do the stairs you now just slide the handle down the pole.
The mini turbine head is included (we had bought it separately for the DC07 all floors for £30) and does clean stairs and upholstery brilliantly.
Drawbacks?
Once the dust compartment is full you just take it to the bin and pull the lever and all the dirt is gone, no need to change those bags. One thing I have noticed is not to let the chamber get too full or you get in a mess trying to empty it all out.
The chamber also never looks clean once you've hoovered the house once. I know it's a hoover and designed to pick up dirt but it would be nice if it wasn't clear plastic that forever looks dirty.
Like all dysons it is heavy and slightly awkward to manouver although I found it a lot easier than the "ball" version of the Dyson.
There is also no storage place on the hoover for the mini turbine head, meaning you have to store it separately from the hoover, and in our house always gets left on a different floor from the floor you are on ;-)
But overall I would heartily recommend this hoover especially if you have pets that insist on moulting all over your house :-)
