I think I’ve mentioned before that I have a German Shepherd, and I may have mentioned she’s black, but I know I haven’t told you I have terracotta coloured carpets downstairs and pale blue in my bedroom. As you can imagine the dog hairs make a bold contrast particularly about now when she is moulting. I’ve had Shepherds for 25 years and have worked my way through many vacuum cleaners in the pursuit of perfection leaving many failures and burnt out motors in my wake.
I had my first Dyson quite a bit back, the turbo, which was quite a decent cleaner but it died during an accidental fall down the stairs. My insurance company replaced it with a comparable model which after a bit of animated discussion turned out to be the DC20 Animalpro.
It’s
a cylinder model although Dyson describes it as a stowaway sledge (I’ve already got a dog and definitely don’t like to think of reindeer romping through my house).
The Animal is compact. Much more so than the old cylinder model. The hose wraps tidily around the cleaner. Dyson have moved away from the nasty purple colour to a cleaner that is now mainly grey with amber and red highlights. The retracting power cord is better made than the old cleaner and retracts all the way in without coaxing .
The animal is the same model as the DC20 Allergy except it also has a turbine head, a mini turbine head and a hard floor tool. You can also purchase an extra head for £15..It has the same filters as the DC20 Allergy. It will cost you around £250
*Facts and figures*
The Animal is 14 in x 10 in x 16 in and weighs in at about 20 lb. The bag less container holds 2 litres and the cable is about 7 yard (6.5 metres). The maximum reach of the cleaner from the plug is 33 feet (10 metres)Like most Dyson’s it has the cyclone effect and it has the Lifetime HEPA filter plus the bacteria and mould killing screen, Bactisafe. These filters are classed as lifetime and the air that comes out of the exhaust is supposedly clean. The tools are stored onboard and the bin is clear so you can see just how much dirt is sucked up .It has a 5 year guarantee and is built more solidly than my old Dyson.
*The heads:
*The Turbine* This is the main head, It has a brush bar that can be turned off on laminate, hard floors or delicate carpets. It sucks up the dog hairs really well needing to go over an area really once, but it doesn’t like cotton or my hair which is on the long side and gets wrapped around the brush bar. It’s a good thing I don’t moult as badly as the dog, for not only would I be bald, but the cut out stops the bar. This does prevent any overheating but it can be a pain in the neck if you are in a rush and the last person to use the cleaner pout it away without clearing the head.
*The mini turbine*
This is what it says… a small version. I use this for removing hair from furniture, the stairs (its easier to manoeuvre) and in the car. Its also good for getting into spaces the big head wont fit, down the side of furniture
This head has long bristles so it’s a bit like a soft broom that sucks. It’s good for laminate, and kitchen and bathroom floors.. One word of warning though, if you clean over something wet it can leave dirty streaks
*The up top tool *
This is the extra head you can purchase for £15. It is small and narrow and ideal in the car as the head twists so you can get into hard to reach places like under the front seats
*Other tools*
You also get the traditional flat sucker, useful for dry spills and a flat, long sucker
*In use*
The Animal in use is a fairly quiet machine. It follows you along quite happily and it takes no effort. I am able to reach all the way up the stairs from the plug at the bottom. The machine isn’t heavy so you can hold it as you go up if you like but it will rest sideways on a stair if you stand behind to support it (the lack of support is what killed my last Dyson) .
The selection of heads is good but it would’ve been nice to include the extra head as the machine certainly isn’t a cheap one. The cord retract is certainly much less flimsy than the old one and it whips back in. the heads are easy to detach and reattach and the bin is easy to empty and replace. the build quality of this machine in general is much improved.
*Cleaning*
The DC20 Animalpro is excellent at its job. It rarely needs to go over an area twice. It takes little effort to use it and it stores away tidily. The tool selection is good and the turbine heads really do get up all the dog hair. The clear cyclone bin means you get a good look at the filth that’s being removed, which is hardly attractive but it does encourage you to empty it regularly.
It does struggle a little with long hair or thread when it wraps round the brush but it is easy to remove and it is a problem with moist cleaners that have a revolving brush .It is expensive and it may not have bee the model I chose if I had been buying myself for that reason but I am glad I have it. It has made my life easier and my house and car cleaner. It’s not very old yet so it’s too soon to tell how well it will stand up to daily use and many, many hairs so I will update this in a few more months and feedback any problems
