I used to have a dyson DC04 Absolute, which served me very well in my old house. My old house had mainly carpets so it really did the job well and the 230 air watts were very impressive for its generation and kept the cleaner sucking for a good 8 years until I gave it away to a friend yesterday. The reason it got given away was because in my new house I've only got hard floors and rugs (apart from when I get a new stair carpet in the future). The old DC04 definately wasn't designed with anything like laminate flooring in James Dyson's mind, so I had to make the DC04 redundant in the garage and settle for a Hoover Sprint (which was terrible, but I couldn't afford anything else sine I needed a new cleaner there-and-then), apart from my getting the dyson out once in a while to give the rugs a good clean. But ever since I have been saving up for a dyson DC20, and it arrived today from www.duck.co.uk and I've not been let down in the slightest.
The new Root Cyclone technology it really great. With the old Dual Cyclone technology, you could tell that a lot of fint dust was getting pulled out of the airflow with the single, large inner cyclone, but the pre-motor filter clearly was still having to catch quite a bit of dust so maybe the cleaner actually was loosing suction. Root Cyclone technology is far more effective. I don't quite know why you get small balls of dust at times rather than just a big hill of dust, but you're clearing getting more out of the airflow and this is evident in the filter - I've done a whole house of cleaning and the filter still looks new, unlike with the DC04 filter which would show browning first use after giving it a wash! It's a shame this cleaner uses only Root8 and not Root 12 technology, since it's precdesecor, the dyson DC08T Animal, features the Root12technology, but still the technology does the same things but in a smaller space.
The turbine head is impressive. I don't know why you'd need the motor head boasted by the DC21 since the turbine head is really good and makes the most of the electricity you're using to power the suction motor rather than consuming more electricity by powering a seperate motor just for the brush bar.
Despite the weight quoted being higher than that of the DC08T Animal, I actually think the DC20 Animal is lighter and more easier to use than my brothers dyson DC08T. I think the quoted weight may include accesories - and the DC20 has more accesories and the like than the previous DC20...so indeed the main cleaner of the DC20 may still be lighter.
I thought, with the Clearbin being on a slope, all debris would pile up slanted and the back would fill up before the front reaches the max mark. But this has not been the case. Without having to interfere in any way the dyson keeps all dirt levelled off.
The dyson is so powerful that, after just 20 minutes of use cleaning the house, it was very close to the max mark. I'm soon to go out and clean the car with the mini turbine head, so it's sure to go over the Max mark then.
My cat loves the mini turbine head, so buy this cleaner or just the mini turbine head to fit a current dyson so that your cat is left content.
Really, I can't recommend this cleaner enough.
