First impressions are Fabulous. We have 3 cats and anywhere up to 5 children running around the house (wide is a childminder) so there is mess, but we do try to keep the carpets clean. As such we vacuum frequently and I was impressed with the upright Hoover we had - until the wheel fell off.
I had always thought of dysons being overpriced and overhyped. I picked this up for £160 along with a free set of Dyson tools, so that took care of the cost problem. However, having now used the DC20 I would pay around £210 for it.
Out of the box it felt like a good quality piece of kit. Has a decent volume container for the dirt (unlike many other cleaners of similar dimensions) and most of the tools fit on the cleaner easily and firmly. Additional tools that are included must be stored seperately, but this is not a problem as there is such a good range of attachments provided in the box.
Performance: Scarily Excellent! Even though we vacuum often the DC20 picked up large amounts of previously "invisible" cat hair even though I had only cleaned the day before. Also picked up very fine dirt from where our weekly cleaner had also used her industrial Vax the previous day! Great at getting under furniture and right to the edge of carpets.
From early use it doesn't seem as if there is going to be a problem in getting clogged up which has to be one of the most annoying things about many cleaners, or for not picking up dirt which is the other most annoying thing about many cleaners..
The Downside: - As the tube wraps around the DC20 you can't stand it on end to take up less floor-space in a cupboard. - Cable retract takes a little coaxing, although others haven't had this problem.
