I love my Dyson, I have done since the day I bought it. BUT it does have a downside - with three fluffy cats running about the house a fair bit of cat fur gets deposited and my Dyson was not great at getting the stair carpet clean. The tools that come with the machine and attach to it just were not up to the job of getting hair (that seems to be glued to the carpet fibres) off the stairs. The brush just got entangled with hair which was no help at all and the crevice device could persuade the hairs to let go.
It has long been a disappointment - however the other day when browsing around Comet I spotted a solution the Dyson Mini Turbine Head which fits Dyson models DC04/05/07/08 and DC 14. This little attachement manages to provide a little mini Dyson powered vacuum on to the end of the accessories tube.
I could hardly wait to get home to try it out! The head comes with a little attachment to adjust the size of the connection - I didn't need it for my DC04 so I assume it is for some of the other models listed. All you do is push it on to the end of the vacuum hose check and switch on. There is a knob on one side which need to be pulled out to get the full turbo suction but apart from that there is nothing else to do to ensure it works to its full capacity.
The advantage with this head is you really do get the great suction that you expect from the Dyson at the end of the attachment. It is about 4 inches wide so it is easy to manoeuvre around on the stairs to ensure that you get into the corners. The revolving brush picked up the cat hair without any problem at all and to do the stair risers as well as the tread was simplicity itself. I could hardly believe it - I got just about the same suction I had come to expect from the main machine at the end of the attachment hose - it was bliss and much easier than trying to do the stairs by carrying the vacuum up there and doing each step like that which had been my normal practice! Edges and corners were so easy and the hair just disappeared up the tube. A few bits did get wound round the beater but they pulled off easily once the job was done.
It is also great on upholstery - again the cats do like to perch on the back of chairs - with this tool you can easily run the vacuum over the whole of the suite this giving it a real clean which you don't get with the standard crevice tool and brush combination. You can also use it to vacuum a mattress which I like to do from time to time to get rid of anything that might be accumulating in there (yes I have seen the magnified photos)
The attachment cost me £24.99 from Comet although you can probably get it cheaper if you bid for a used one on eBay. To me it wasn't expensive because it solved a problem for me which has previously cost me a lot of time - and time is one of my most valuable commodities. It has, in my view, made a great vacuum cleaner even better and I have absolutely no regrets about purchasing it.
Would I recommend it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most certainly if, like me, you have pets who deposit pet hair around the place and you have one of the standard Dyson models which this would fit. It is great for stairs, furniture and hard to reach places. They do make a similar one for the car at the same price but it is a little smaller - to be honest I am hoping that mine will also get service cleaning the car.
The only marginal drawback I have found is that it doesn't store anywhere on the machine so needs to be stored separately and brought out when you need it. I don't find it too much of inconvenience in practice it is just about planning my vacuuming 'route' in advance.
The stairs now look very smart - I do have a cream carpet and cream cats so they never looked too bad before it was just that they looked 'fluffy' in places which for me wasn't the best look! Now they look great so, thank you Dyson for a very handy little tool for people like me.
Advantages: Powerful, doesn't lose suction and a wide range of optional extras Disadvantages: I can't get on with the angled crevice tool
I started out with the original Dyson DC01 but I was always convinced mine wasn't as powerful as my mums and didn't remove dog hair very well. After buying a new carpet I bought the DC14 Allergy at a special offer price a couple of weeks ago and I wouldn't be without it now. It almost takes the carpet up with it!! And it loves dog hair. It really does make vaccuuming easy. When using the pipe, it almost takes off but I guess you need to actually be holding it to believe it. The only thing I can't get on with is the angled crevice tool. I much preferred the straight one on my original Dyson. You can also buy a miniturbinehead to attatch to the pipe (which I will invest in) which makes cleaning stairs even easier. The pipe is long enough to reach to the top of the stairs in one go. All in all, a fantastic cleaner. ...
Advantages: One of the best in the market, whether you have pets or not. Disadvantages: Two tools are not carried on the machine.
***Good***
>Amazing stuff
>Very durable
>HEPA
>Very high Air Watt count
>Turbine and mini-turbineheads for best all-round pick up in any vacuum cleaner (even dysons) that I've ever used
>Wraps away easily and neatly
>Hard floor tool doesn't push big bits around hard floors but has a Large Debris Channel
>On-board tool storage
>Impressive cord rewind that doesn't have a mind of it's own and never fails
>HEPA filtration
>ROOT 8 cyclone technology
>Power you can see after vacuuming just one rug
>In my opinion, it 'never looses suction'
***Bad***
>It's a shame that the Hard Floor and MiniTurbineHead tools aren't catered for carring on the machine, but I guess it's reasonably because there's not really anywhere else to but them other than in a drawer
I used to have a dyson DC04 Absolute, which served me ...
Advantages: Suction, ease of use Disadvantages: None
to dry for 24 hours before refitting into the machine.
STORING THE VACUUM CLEANER
Storing the DC19 is not that simple. Even thought it looks small and the base fits into quite a small space, it needs a space high enough to fit in the handle. Luckily I have a space large enough under my stairs. But definitely something to consider if you are thinking of buying a DC19. If you don't have enough space Dyson have models which are much easier to store.
EXTRAS
There are many extras you can buy for your Dyson apart from the ones that come with it. The prices range from £11.74 for the mattress tool, to £24.47 for the miniturbinehead.
Hard floor tool - this attachment is better at picking up on hard floors. It has long bristles to prevent scratching or marking on wood or delicate floors.
Flexi crevice tool - this ...
