Is there life after Big brother? That’s the question. What does E4 have to offer the viewers to replace the 18 hour a day coverage of Big Brother?
If you like dating shows, or feel you didn’t see enough of Davina McCall during BB, there’s Streetmate. Davina drags some poor person out and about trawling the streets, pubs, and shops, until they see someone they fancy (or someone Davina decides they might fancy). If that person agrees to it, they go on a date.
Then, in the way of tacky American dating shows you have Cupid Confidential. Two ’guys’ are set up on a blind date and usually do 3 things, some sort of activity afternoon, followed by a meal, and then on to a pub or club for the rest of the evening. If you’re lucky (?) you might get an occasional Cupid confidential double bill.
Not enough for you? Well there’s Five Go Dating, in which a group of ten people (5 gals 5 guys) go on a joint date with the intention of getting it together with their ideal partner from within the group. The presenter of this one is highly irritating... sorry, couldn’t tell you her name, I watched this briefly for research only!!
Appealing probably more to the younger crowd is Popworld. Thirty minutes of celebrity gossip, news, videos and the like from the pop industry. Shown daily, it’s not a bad programme but not why I’d call compelling TV viewing either.
If you feel you need a dose of ’reality TV’ still, whilst in recovery from BB withdrawal, there’s Chained. It’s one of the few new shows that E4 is offering and I don’t know a lot about it. The concept is that several people are chained together and have to try to live, (as far as I understand it) a normal life like that, ie shopping, cooking, etc etc. Not sure on that one, time will tell.
There’s also Shipwrecked, although it’s a repeat of the first series. A similar concept to Survivor, but without the million pound incentive to do it. Lot’s of bitching and backstabbing, it’s going to be a bit boring if you saw it the first time round. (Bit boring even if you didn’t if truth be told).
In the way of ‘Soap’ offerings you can catch Hollyoaks. Soapy drama about a group of teens/young adults and their families living in Chester. Don’t be fooled into thinking E4 are showing new episodes, they’re not. All the episodes screened are previously shown on C4, but as it’s a different channel E4 do not mark them down as repeats.
More repeats come in the shape of Friends (although admittedly, the last series screened wasn’t a repeat), and along similar lines you’ve got Ally McBeal, and Sex and the City. (Not sure about the latter two being repeats or not but the way E4 normally works is to repeat C4’s most popular programmes so if you’re watching current series’ already, I wouldn’t bother with them unless you missed a fair few episodes or are totally addicted to the shows.)
If you’re looking for a laugh or light entertainment, you’ve got a few options. Graham Norton, and Trigger Happy TV, both already repeats, which are then repeated again later during the night schedule. I like Graham Norton, but repeated repeats of repeats???? No, I’ll pass on that. Then, repeats of Banzai, Eurotrash and The priory
If you like classic TV drama then there’s one guaranteed way to stop your further enjoyment of it, do a remake of the original series. Back from the 60s is The Fugitive. Can’t help much on this one as it was a bit before my time, and I didn’t see the 1993 film version either. One of the few new series’ to hit E4 though so shouldn’t complain, it might be worth a glance. Another resurrection from times gone by is Star Trek, not a remake though, the original first series.
A couple more new series’ are The West Wing and The Sopranos. I’ve not seen either show before so I can’t really comment but the adverts I’ve seen for them admittedly look slightly more promising than most of the drivel scheduled.
Well, that’s about it. You get a handful of one off documentary type programs and the odd (repeated) pop concert, but apart from that, not much else. Oh, except a few adverts, but in defence of E4, not that many compared to some channels.
E4 can be found on ITV-Digital (previously OnDigital) on channel no. 42 and on Sky Digital on channel no. 205. It’s a non-subscription channel automatically included with digital packages so you’re not paying for it specifically. (Good job really).
So in conclusion, is there life after Big Brother? For E4, no, there doesn’t appear to be much. But there are other channels to choose from. For those previously addicted to the BB coverage, now is the time to look further than E4 for your daily TV viewing.
Advantages: Good telly. Many American imports. First Look at shows before they get to Channel4 Disadvantages: Quite a lot of the same repeats
E4 was launched way back in 2001. It was one of the first of Channel4's sister channels to be found on satellite/cable as a subscription service. E stands for Entertainment and that is exactly what this channel claims to do, Entertain. In 2004, E4 joined the subscription service 'Top UP TV' and then a year later in 2005, it became free, joining 'Freeview'.
It's full of American TV shows, mainly from US giants 'NBC' and 'ABC'. If you like 'FRIENDS', ... ...day of early Big Bro, E4 streamed live footage 24/7 of the house. Whatever time of day, you could sit down and see what was going on...or more to the point, what WASN'T going on, in the house...it's pretty dull. E4 features allowed you choose which camera angle you wanted to watch from too...wow weeee (I hope you 'heard' the sarcasm in my writing then).
Another bonus for all E4 viewers, was that it became the home of 'First Look', whereby you could ...

...do it!
E4 is a digital and digital satellite channel which is closely related to the more familiar Channel 4. The E in this case stands for entertainment, which is what E4 is all about – nothing really serious, hard-hitting or educational is to be found on here! Some people might describe it as Channel 4 without the boring bits. In this review, I’m not going to describe the actual programmes in detail to you – there are countless ... ...thing that many people associate E4 with at the moment is Big Brother II, which E4 is showing live, 18 hours a day. If you haven’t heard of the Big Brother phenomenon, then where have you been for the last few weeks?! When I say “live” however, this is not strictly correct. What we see when we switch on is NOT Big Brother as it happens, rather, there is a ten minute delay, as you can tell if you hear the housemates mention what ...

Advantages: They show a lot of the best programmes Disadvantages: Poor picture quality, just another case of being ripped-off
...4 and put on to E4 are the most popular shows, shows that people have been following for many a year like, Friends, Trigger Happy TV, ER, etc.
So why was the channel launched, I ask?
Well no doubt Channel 4 would tell us the reason is, “So they can show us a broader range of programmes”, which in itself would be fair enough, as there are one or two decent new shows, that where never shown on Channel 4, and it also gives us the chance ... ...is, the picture quality of E4 is very poor (whether this only applies to my area, I don't know) and most of the programmes are actually shown in wide-screen (which is very annoying, when you don’t own a wide-screen TV, like myself), I am also lead to believe that some people in certain parts of the land, don’t even get this channel on their Cable Packages, so they are losing out twice.
I noticed when going to the E4 category listing, ...

Advantages: The best of Channel 4 on one channel Disadvantages: Too much Big Brother coverage, if you think that that is a bad thing
...Brother, then I'll look at E4 a bit more closely.
The nation has gone Big Brother mad once again. Last time round we had the usual highlights show on Channel 4 every evening, and for those of us who could be bothered (which didn't include me), we could watch the antics of the housemates live on the web site. This year the producers have gone one better, by putting it live on E4 almost all day long. It's actually on E4 for around 18 hours a day so ... ...up.
The coverage on E4 allows you to choose what you watch, one of four video feeds, two of which are live and the other two tape delayed. The first two feeds are from two different areas of the house, though if everyone goes into the lounge, the two feeds are from different cameras in the same area. Now and again the sound goes, though they say this is to make sure it is suitable for daytime viewing. From this I'm guessing that it's not quite live, ...

Advantages: new shows before terrestrial tv Disadvantages: frequent repeats, long ad breaks
...for your fix. E4 is still in it's infancy and is broadcast from 4pm to 4am everyday. The rest of it's programme contact is very mixed. Quite a lot of the stuff is repeats. Turn on most days and you're greeted with the lame Shipwrecked. In fact up until primetime the channel is packed with youth orientated programming that features dating shows and music shows. One good thing is that you can see the under-rated Party of Five which was never really ... ...this channel first. E4 can only get better and when it cuts down on the frequent repeats and increases it's broadcasting hours more people will tune in. The ad breaks are also a bit long but I suppose the moeny has to come from somwhere and with most US sitcom shows running 22 minutes it's expected. At the moment it provides a good showcase for all the best entertainment Channel 4 has to offer. Throw in a few films some weekday nights and it's going ...

Advantages: Has some amusing parts Disadvantages: thinking it's funnier than it is
Jackass is a relatively new E4 program, usually on around 11 p.m. The adverts for it sum up what it is : a man who does rediculously stupid and dangerous things. The advert shows him naked with a swarm of bees acting as his pants (ouch) and him generally falling into dangerous places.
So I thought I'd check it out as I thought it might be good, particularly as E4 tend to have the best programs normally (except for Chained but that's another subject). However I was disappointed as the whole program seemed to be him and a friand in a car park. They had stolen a shopping trolley and found it hilarious to wheel each other up to the curb so whoever was in the trolley went flying headfirst. Yes it was dangerous and could have hurt so they got that bit right, but no it wasn't funny.
However I have since caught parts of the program ...

Advantages: My little sister thinks its alright Disadvantages: Boring, bad characters, annoying characters, rubbish storylines
Priveledged
Priveledged is a US comedy show on E4. It shows on Sundays at 7pm.
I decided to write a review on this because there aren't any reviews on it yet, also because I have seen this a few times and don't think it is that good, I'm afraid.
The story is a bit boring, really. The main character, Megan wasn't doing very well in her last job, and then she gets hired by someone who is supposed to be really famous to tutor her two grandchildren, as they aren't doing very well in school.
Megan gets caught up in the lives of the two grandchildren as she has to move in with them and she becomes more like a parent to them than a tutor.
There is no tension or parts in this where you worry or feel for the characters, you can always tell whats going to happen, and what does happen isn't ever really exciting.
The characters in ...
Advantages: Funny, easy to dip into, lots of episodes Disadvantages: None
Friends has to be one of the most popular American Tv shows ever. I should think that the majority of people have heard, if not seen the programme, especially considering the endless repeats on E4!
Friends started in 1994 and ran until 2004 which is a very good run for a TV show! There are 10 series, with each series containing around 24 episodes of 30 minutes each (just over 20 when watching on DVD without breaks). This is a lot of episodes, especially for the UK, where series lengths are not quite as long, most series here run for about 10 episodes and a lot of the time for much less!
The shows revolves around it's six main characters, and starting on the left of the above photo, Phoebe, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Monica and Joey. They are all friends together who hang out a lot at Monica's and at the coffee house, Central Perk in ...
