After 15 years my analogue TV was on its was on its way out, rather than rush into a digital TV at great expense I decided to try a new analogue TV (with scart sockets) and a Phillips free view digital box. Amongst the selection of stations a British digital TV channel pay - tv E4 is one of the companion channels to channel 4 including E4+1. I'm hoping to pay for it with the proceeds from reviews of stations available. Keep you eyes open. Some of the information below is from Wikipedia (a website) more is available there.
THE FACTS
Launched 18/01/2001 and owned by the channel 4 corporation. The E stands for entertainment. It had an estimated audience of 1.2 % share (0.4% for E4+1, multi channel home user) in April 2006. And was launched to appeal to the lucrative 18 - 35 year old market (it was 16 - 30). Daily showings are available via terrestial (Freeview (free to air May 2005)) channel 14). Satellite (Sky digital channel 140). Cable (Telewest channel 144, NTL channel 144) and is normally part of a basic package.
CONTENT
The content is made up of programmes already on channel 4 including US imports. American programs such as Friends, ER, The OC, Smallville, The Sopranos, Six feet under, Scrubs, Lost. And lots of homegrown chat & reality shows such as Big Brother with interactive features such as voting options. Some of the imports are screened ahead of their C4 broadcasts
The channel has a website at www.channel4.com that is quite useful for programme reviews and listings (on the right hand side of the site) with E4 links, there is not too much advertising. The listing for Sunday 16 June is as follows.
12.05 Popworld, 12.55 Chantelle (Big Brother), 13.25 Pure T4, 13.55 Big Brother Live, 14.55 Big Brother Little Brother, 14.55 Big Brother diary room uncut, 15.55 Big Brother Little Brother, 17.00 Friends, 17.30 Friends, 18.00 T4 on the Beach, 19.00 The OC, 20.00 Friends, 20.30 Friends, 21.00 lost, 22.00 Desperate Housewives, 23.50 part 2, 00.00 Big brother, little Brother, 01.00 Big Brother : Live, 06.00 Big Brother (Monday).
MY OPINION
The fact that the channel is free with my digital box (and probably with some digital TV) is a great boon in fact probably the stations greatest asset. Advertising is not too time consuming. How it managed to make the ciao top ten HitList TV channels I don't know. Rather like ITV2 The US content adds something to its novelty value. E4 has been noticed for its heavy use of British words that have fallen out of circulation e.g. ruddy & gaff (listen out for them). E4 is also the London postcode for Chingford the significance of this may come to mind later. I have not noticed much news broadcast. This I find makes it a channel to switch on for pure fantasy. After a while you might need to consult the listings to ensure you don't capture Big Brother all the time.
