For my daughter's birthday (who is 8) her nan bought her this set of Hama Beads, something I had never seen or heard of before.
The set is purchased individually and comprises of white bases which come in every shape imaginable. My daughter to begin with was given a star, heart, butterfly, giraffe, circle, camel and a square. The bases are made up of hundreds of little plastic prongs. With these bases you purchase the beads, they either come in tubs of 3000 mixed colour beads or you can but individual bags of 1000 which come in the same colour, allowing you to build up your collection of colours.
The idea is to place the beads onto the plastic base prongs building up pictures. It is very fiddly and keeps the children sitting glued to it for hours, even myself was totally addicted sitting placing beads onto the bases. The only drawback is if you move suddenly and the beads all fall off, so it is best to do this on a flat work area rather than a silly mum doing balancing tricks on her lap. The children can use their imagination on the plain bases like the circle and square to make all sorts, my son made a Fila Football out of his, and my daughter made a cicrle with her initial in for a door plaque.
Now here comes the thing I could not believe, and this does require an adult to complete. Once your child has finished his/her item you then cover it in greaseproof paper. You then IRON over the top of the greaseproof paper for several minutes. As you iron to my amazement all the beads melt into one another and form a solid shape. You then allow it to cool and peel the finished picture off leaving the board intact underneath, imagination makes this endless fun for your children.
The beads as I said previously come in packets or tubs, for the packets they were 99p each, the tub cost £1.50. The boards range from 50p to around £2.00 for two, but the boards stay intact throughout, so never need to be replaced once purchased. The beads can be purchased from all Hobby shops or on-line by just typing Hama on your search engine.
These are a must I think if your children like to make things and give hours of enjoyment for them and also for mums and dads once you pick them up and start.
