Another Elf product, this one I was probably the most impressed with...until the other day. But we'll get to that in a second.

The New Moisture Care Lip Color is what I would describe as a lip stain rather than a gloss, which comes in eight shades, ranging from pale beige/nude, to bright red, to brown. It's "intensive hydrating elements" (which Elf does not list) are supposed to make your lips soft and supple.

So does it work? Yes...but I did encounter a fairly gross problem with the product (read on...)

The product comes in a pen-style tube with a slanted applicator, however instead of being made of the usual synthetic foamy material, it is soft and cottony. At first I thought this was nice as it's softer, although I did notice that a lot of the product seemed to get sucked into that, so it seemed like maybe it was wasting a bit. Not only that but you have to twist the pen about 15 times to activate, so by the time you are ready to use it, there is a lot less product than you would initially anticipate.

I find that each time you use the lip colour, you need to twist the pen. I would advise twisting only once, because even if you can't see any dots of it on the surface, they will appear when you rub the applicator onto your lips.

Now, I have only had this product for around six weeks, and I use it fairly regularly, at least two to three times a week. So imagine my horror when I came to use it and found a small patch of MOULD on the applicator! I suppose this is why other brands don't use cotton applicators. This is also why you should only twist once, so there is not excess lingering on the cotton swab.

I must admit that because I'm so struck on the sheer colour (I chose Cherry Tart, which is pretty bright but I have dark red lips so it looked great), I was incredibly gross and scraped off the mould (there was only a tiny amount..but still), picked off any cotton that might have touched it, and kept using it after a quick rinse, vowing never to twist out too much product again. I mean, I'm not actually INGESTING it, so I guess I'll live.

The fact that I am prepared to use this after such an encounter must tell you something about the product itself - it really does leave my lips feeling nice both while I'm wearing it (not at all sticky) and after, and I love the subtle vanilla-mint taste and smell (exactly like a Murray Mint)!

I will probably buy more. As with all Elf products, they cost £1.50, so it's hardly breaking the bank. Although I am much more careful about how much product I twist out now!

EDIT - Have had to throw it away, one day after this review, because it smelled like mildew. Disgusting!! Have contacted Elf.
