An unforgettable first novel, an author to shout about, a campaign to ensure that everyone knows this is the funniest, sharpest read of the year. Consisting entirely of staff...
more...emails, e spends a fortnight in the company of Miller Shanks, an advertising agency that scales dizzying peaks of incompetence. Among the cast are a CEO with an MBA from the Joseph Stalin School of Management, a Creative Director who is a genius, if only in his own head, designers and copywriters driven by breasts, beer or Bach Flower Remedies, and secretaries who drip honey and spit blood. The novel is a tapestry of insincerity, backstabbing and bare-arsed bitchiness: that is to say, everyday office politics. Oh yes, and there is some work to be done too -- the quest for advertising's Eldorado, the Coca-Cola account. e is sleazy, scurrilous and scabrously funny. It also contains a first-class joke about the Pope and sound advice on the maintenance of industrial carpet tiles.

My Rating: Need to Read.

If you work in an office you'll love this...If you work for an advertising agency it will become your bible.

If you only read one book this year make it E. by Matt Beaumont. This is in my opinion one of the funniest books to come out in the last three years.

The first book of its kind. E is Set in the English branch of a worldwide advertising industry and told completely through the medium of e-mails e. spends a few weeks with the employees of Miller Shanks as they desperately try and land the Coca-Cola account. If you work in an office you'll giggle, if you work for an advertising agency you'll kill yourself laughing.

Every character in here is recognisable. From the CEO who thinks he's God to the backstabbing secretaries, self important Account handlers and the laid back creatives. You know who they are, Every office has one even if the job titles different, the sad git from accounts who counts his paperclips, knows no-one but pretends he does and sends e-mails to all departments. The pedantic Office manager who informs you what paper to
use and exactly what time the fire alarm will be. The I.T head who never quite knows what the problem is….

Some of the action is admittedly a little far fetched, I mean that advertisement shoot…(No plot spoilers, keeping my trap shut)… but it just adds to the overall enjoyment of the entire book.

It’s a little difficult to read at first because of the format (from / cc/ to) but if your used to e-mail it won't take you long, and once you start to recognise the characters you stop flicking back and forth and settle down to the story.

Despite its difficult format this book has you laughing from the first page, literally! Don't just ask my opinion, I bought the book last week and started reading it on the train. I was laughing by the end of page one, I let a friend of mine have a look, she read the first page…laughing in recognition all the way, I gave someone a look at work, laughing by
the end of page one….

I swear the first time you read that somehow (CEO) David Clutton's e-mail has ended up in the Helsinki office you know that Beaumont knows his stuff.

I've nearly finished it for the second time and I'm ready to start again. This is in fact one of those books best read twice, the first time it's enjoyable and the second time hysterical because you get the in jokes so much more once you don't worry about who's who. It doesn't take long to read, it took me about four hours and it is extremely well worth it.

E. just missed a five star rating from me because of its slightly difficult format, but take my word for it it's well worth the read. You can buy e, from Amazon.co.uk for a reasonable £5.49 and you definitely get your moneys worth.

Enjoy.

The sequel to e. The e. Before Christmas is now available from all good stockists (£2.99 at Amazon.co.uk) A review from me will no doubt appear here in the near future.
