I think knowing how to swim is one of the most important things in life that we need to know. This is not only for safety but for enjoyment too. I enjoy a variety of water sports from swimming to wake boarding and I really want my kids to inherit this love too. Swimming has been really important to us ever since our kids were first born and I have taken them swimming from very early on. In the beginning this was just a little class for babies to get them used to the water and now with two kids my husband and I take them to a public pool on a sunday morning so they can get used to the water. Just recently though my little girl has just started to take structured swim lessons and this is one of the tools they use.

As the name suggest this is a floatation device and not a life saving device although I guess if you did see someone in trouble in the water you could use it to help you but thats not its specific usage. The float is used in the swimming lesson to give the kids a bit of confidence. My little girl is not the most comfortable in the water but you can see that she is a bit more relaxed when she has got hold of this. We do not use this throughout the whole lesson, just at certain times. She is not old enough to use this on her own so I am in the water with her. I will be holding her and then we use the float for them to rest their tummy on and hold with their arms and hands so they get used to having something between them and the water and learn to use it to learn how to kick and support them and stabilise them while they still cannot swim for themselves.

The float is pink and has a really pretty picture of a seahorse outline imprinted on it. The float is made of foam and is fairly thick and quite substantial. The nice thing is all of these floats at our private lessons are fairly new so they have not suffered from bending or bits coming off them yet. I suppose they do get a bit tatty when they get older but that is the nature of a foam float but at the moment the floats are lovely and sturdy. The middle of the float has a layer of white foam running through it but I have to say I think this is for decoration rather than any extra floatation protection.

What I also like is that the float is nice and soft for the little ones to rest on and not scratchy like some floats can be. It also has nice rounded edges and I think this makes it easier to hold on to than floats that have square edges.

The float is suitable from 2 years and this is the age at which our class starts anyway so that it good. A nice safety device for the pool which works well.
