MeyerHachette DigitalMay 3, 2013Bella? Edwards soft voice came from behind me. I turned to see him spring lightly up the porch steps, his hair windblown from running. He pulled me into his arms at once, and kissed me again. His kiss frightened me. There was too much tension, too strong an edge to the way his lips crushed mine - like he was afraid we had only so much time left to us. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob - knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which? Eclipse is the third ina series of books written by Stephenie Meyer, aimed primarily at teenage girls, but enjoyable by anyone, really. At this point, I'd like to point out that, in order to properly review Eclipse, it is important to touch on events that have happened in the previous two books, Twilight and New Moon. As such, this review may reveal things about these two books that could spoil them if you have not previously read them. However, I will not be spoiling Eclipse for you.
It is told in the narrative format by Bella Swan, who arrives in the sleepy and dreary town of Forks, Washington, at the age of 16. Each of the books takes an academic school year, much like the Harry Potter series, and describes the events that happen. So far in the series, we have seen the emergence of vampires and werewolves as main parts of the story. Essentially, the whole saga is a romantic one, first and foremost. Each book deals with a different relationship. Twilight examined how Bella falls in love with Edward (a vampire), while New Moon examined the relationship between Bella and Jacob Black (a werewolf), which develops somewhat as Edward is largely out of the picture.
However, Eclipse combines these two relationships as the 'triangle' is explored. The two 'boys' continually fight for Bella's affections, and in a way, I had a bit of annoyance with Bella as a character, as throughout the books. She is, in a way, acting merely as a teenager who is unsure of two things: the effect she has on men, and what she wants from them. However, she leads Jacob on through her actions, if not through her words, before then dropping him and everything else for Edward, and she comes across as very selfish. Even though the narrative is from Bella's perspective, you can feel Jacob's emotional pain throughout. You can't help feel that there is a lot in common with the triangle relationship in Wuthering Heights here, particularly as Meyer virtually announces this anyway by having Bella refer to the book constantly to compare her own romantic quandry.
Yet Meyer doesn't let us wallow in the romance, and this is where the books are appealing to a wide range of readers. It is as much horror and action as romance, and this is due to the clever aspect of making vampires and werewolves seem as human as possible emotionally while making them physically exceptional. In the previous two books, there have been threats and dangers to humans, werewolves and vampires alike, with Bella herself being targeted by a vicious female vamp whosemate was killed by Edward in Twilight. As further dangers emerge in Eclipse, such as the growing horde of newborn vampires in the nearby city of Seattle, and the reminder of the existence of the Volturi, the royalty of the vampire world, the mafia, if you like.
And, of course, there is the reality of the eternal feud betweent the vampires and the werewolves. You see, werewolves exist purely to defend the humans against vampires, and for most cases, this is a very valid existence. However, Edward and his family, the Cullens, are vegetarian vampires, and do not hunt humans, seeking instead to hunt and eat animals, much as humans themselves do, the only difference being how they're eaten!! Even so, this is no excuse for the werewolves, and thus the tension between the werewolves in La Push (15 mins from Forks) and the Cullen vampires (right next door!) rides high throughout. Meyer paints a picture that makes you feel things could kick off at any point, with Bella being the only thing stopping them from ripping each other to shreds. That the wolves and the Cullens have a truce so long as the Cullens bite no humans, seems to be a frail one at best, as Bella wishes to become a vampire to join Edward for the rest of their eternity. This would involve being bitten by one of them, thus breaking the truce. This is touched upon mainly in New Moon, and then every now and then in Eclipse, as Bella wrestles with her affections for both 'boys' involved.
The book is around 630 pages long, and is well divided into chapters with brief but leading titles. Each is between 20 and 30 pages long, but you don't feel the need to reach the next chapter before pausing. I found it convenient to stop at any point, as the tale isn't made particularly complicated. There is a lot of explaining done in terms of the history of the werewolves, and each of the Cullens tells Bella how they became vampires. This is more a follow on of the style that Meyer adopts throughout the books, and it is ncie to get snippets of the historical side of things at stages during the books, as opposed to all at once.
I really enjoyed this book. There is plenty more to it than is included in this review, but ommissions have been made purely to prevent any spoilers, things I am dying to mention but don't won't to ruin the moment. There were many points where I was pleasantly surprised and made me not want to put the book down. I don't want you all to miss out on these surprises. Suffice to say, Meyer paints a full picture, and expands on everything that has happened before, bringing back as many characters in as many ways as she can possibly do without going overboard. And the scene is set brilliantly well for the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, which I have now started reading.
I found Eclipse really really hard to put down. It is effortless reading without being too simple. There are a few editorial ommissions which I was annoyed at, a couple of spelling mistakes and missed words and punctuation, which it is rare to see these days, but they didn't spoil the overall effect of the book, and they're nothing to do with Meyer's immense skill as a wordslinger! Eclipse is readily available to buy, we managed to get the first three books for £6 from a second hand bookshop - bargain! Recommended, but in order to have a clue what is going on, you really do need to read the books in order, starting with Twilight, then New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Meyer is also reportedly writing a fifth book for the series.
Advantages: More interesting discoveries about the characters. Disadvantages: Lack of direction of the plot.
Twilight Series - 3rd Book. ***WARNING NOTE: This is mainly for potential readers of the Twilight books, as I know some don't like to know anything until they read it. This review does contain some revealing details 'SPOILERS' of the plot, so if you're one of those people who do get bothered by this, then please do not read otherwise it might ruin some of the surprises. What I thought of the book: ****************************
After the disappointment ... ...on with this book. I found this third book to be so much better than the others. A lot more happens in this book. With the previous books, I felt the author was either stretching out what seemed like a thin plot, it seemed to make apparent that perhaps the minds of young teenage girls were too delicate and fragile to handle too much information all at once and hence I felt that very little ever happened in each of the previous books. The third book ...

Advantages: engrossing and just as magic as the first two books Disadvantages: very lengthy
Stephenie meyer's third book Eclipse, is based on three main characters, Bella swan a girl who is in love with a vampire called Edward, and her best friend who is a werewolf called Jacob. This book focuses on her relationship with these two enemies.
She has to choose which one is more important to her, her relationship with Edward or her friendship with Jacob..
For anyone who has read the first two installments you should know this is just as gripping, ... ...it did get really frustrating at times trying to find out who she would end up with! so i would definitely recommend reading it more than once!! if you get impatient and skip alot of the book in your first reading!
This book is far more in detail than the first two, so the lengthy paragraphs might annoy those who want to read quick, but Stephenie still adds that magic touch to this book, and thats why we love her. ...

**Book Cover**
The cover for Eclipse is, like the others in this series, very pretty to look at. It depicts a red ribbon torn in two on a black background: simple yet effective.
StephenieMeyer herself explained the cover?the ribbon on the front of Eclipse is being unsuccessfully torn, with strands still holding on. This is supposed to represent that it is not always easy to make a "clean cut," meaning how hard it is to let go ...
