As our company began to make plans to become more "carbon neutral" one of the small changes to take place was to replace the kettles used in our office from standard kettles to more energy efficient kettles and the Eco Kettle now gets pride of place in our staff kitchens and I have now invested in one myself.
*~*What is the Eco Kettle?*~* The Eco Kettle is designed to use enough energy to boil the amount of water required. It is estimated that, on average, we use twice as much water that is required, I am guilty of this, I like filling the kettle one and boil it each time I want a drink, definitely "Not Energy Efficient!" The kettle is designed to allow you to fill the kettle with the maximum amount of water and this is stored in one chamber and a button at the top of the kettle can depress enough water to fill one cup allowing you to boil enough water for the amount of cups that you need to fill so there is no wasted water boiled over and over again.
The kettle uses 31% less energy than normal kettles and it boils really quickly and it actually looks quite stylish as you can see from the picture provided by Ciao.
*~*Using the Kettle*~* The kettle is cordless and if you try to use it without reading the instructions you will get quite baffled like I did.
When you first use the kettle you should boil a full tank of water and discard that to ensure that it is completely clean. Excuse my ignorance but surely this step is not very eco friendly as not only am I wasting a full tank of water but boiling the kettle unnecessarily so maybe this could be something the Eco people could look at removing??
First and foremost the kettle does function like any other the kettle has a cordless base and this should be plugged into the mains.
To open the kettle there is latch and you will need to push this back towards the handle for the lid to open so that you can fill the internal water tank, it is then vital that you transfer the correct amount of water to the boiling tank, this can be done by pressing down the blue button on the top of the lid also referred to as the valve button and this will pump 1 cup of water into the boiling tank at a time allowing the correct amount of water to be boiled. There are two windows on the kettle as per the picture provided by Ciao the left clear window is the boiling chamber and the clear window to the right is the internal water tank, as you depress the blue button the water transfers across from the right window to the front left window which indicates the number of cups that water will provide. I have found that 2 cups makes one mug and 1 cup level only provides ¾ of a cup.
It is vital that you only boil the kettle when there is at least enough water to make 1 cup in the boiling chamber or the kettle will boil dry, there is an automatic shut off facility this I discovered when I first used the kettle and saw there was water in the internal tank but not the front tank which is the boiling chamber and within a few moments of pressing the on button the switch popped back up activating the automatic cut-off facility.
The kettle can then operate in a normal manner by placing on the cordless power base and pressing the blue switch located under the handle down and this will then boil the water for the number of cups provided, it will automatically switch off when the water is boiled and it boils the water very quickly.
If you need to boil all the water in the internal water tank there is an easier way than pumping it one cup by one cup, this is to rotate the blue button in the direction of the arrow that is embedded into the button this will ensure that the valve is locked to provide larger quantities over 1 litre, however it is important to release the valve as soon as you have boiled the water to ensure that the kettle is again used economically and to prevent the seal becoming less effective.
The kettle is easy to use and even has a removable filter in the spout to remove limescale, it is easy to clean by running under water, this should be done as soon as any build up appears visible.
*~*Would I recommend?*~* I think this is an ideal option especially for use in work places as it is vital that everyone tries to do their bit for the environment and this kettle saves on water, energy and time. Many people use the same water and boil it over and over again which uses more energy, the beauty with this kettle is that you can keep it full all of the time but it will only ever boil the required amount of water. The kettle looks modern and would not look out of place on the worktop, the kettle is simple and basic so if you want fancy colour changing images when you boil your kettle then this would not be for you.
The kettles are currently on offer at £29.95 offering a £10 discount if you buy online at ethical superstore.com which is a good buy, I thought the kettle would be more expensive that a standard kettle and to be honest this fits right inline with the standard price of a kettle. The Eco kettle is produced by Product Creation Ltd who are a UK based design company and it has recently been awarded the prestigious "recommended" mark by the Energy Saving Trust.
Purchasing this kettle has helped me to make changes to my lifestyle and as well as recycling, improving the insulation in my home and changing all bulbs to the energy saving ones, I feel I am starting to make more steps to helping the environment and this is an ideal way of using the products out there made specifically for this purpose.
Advantages: saves time, energy and pennies Disadvantages: takes a little bit of getting used to
The Eco Kettle is designed for you to be able to more accurately put in just the right amount of water that you want boiled - therefore saving energy for the planet and saving you money in electricity costs. How does it work: the kettle has 2 chambers; one acts as a reservoir (this is the one you fill) and then by pushing and holding down a button on the lid of the kettle you transfer the required amount of water to the boiling chamber. Both chambers ... ...I love that I'm being eco and env friendly, saving the world and saving pennies; I love that as a big coffee drinker I' m spending less time at the sink as I only fill the kettle (ie reservoir part) a couple of times a day; I love that its cordless and still looks like an ordinary kettle.
What's not so great: As other reviewers have said, it isn't perfect. I think its great and wouldn't be without it, however, you need to know the downside: If the ...

...it to others.
The Eco kettle is about saving energy (and carbon emissions) and saving money on your electicity bill. There is no question that the Eco kettle means that we are now only boiling what we need for cups of tea and coffee and it is ideal for this.
One drawback is that it doesn't have a very large capacity. If you use boiled water from the kettle for filling a pasta pan, you may have to do 2 trips. Also, there are a couple of quirks: ...

Advantages: Water always in kettle Disadvantages: pouring difficult, gauges not specific, heavy when filled
One of my pet hates is not being able to gauge the right amount of water in a kettle and ending up boiling more than I need.
The ecokettle seemed just the job.
The concept is fantastic and for the environments sake wish I could say that I am very pleased with it. My main quibbles are that when the top resovoir is full it can be a bit top heavy which makes it harder to balance than a normal kettle. I have not really got used to it and have rarely ... ...someone with weak wrists.
The spout is tucked far back and cannot be seen when you are pouring so until you get used to where the water comes out you have to crane your neck.
The gauges on the side, one cup, two cups etc are more of a teacup size which I never use so I have to guess where the mug measurement would be. So in essence it is the same as a normal kettle.
The company had a problem with seals that meant that I had to resquest a new one. ...

The essence behind the eco kettle is great - save energy by only boiling the amount of water you need. The reality of the kettle could be improved. Its a lot more complicated then i thought it would be. You have to fill a central resevoir with water then push a button on top to let the right amount through to the boiling reservoir. The button is quite stiff and i at first struggled to with this. The cup sizes are for cups so you need to fill it slightly ... ...is quite heavy when full and if you are only boiling enough for one cup you have to hold it almost up side down to get water out. And i have found that boiling water can come flying out of the spout when returning the kettle to the up right position.
But on a plus point it is very quick to boil and once you get used to it easy to use. I would buy another because i like the idea behind it. ...

Quick review of Eco MAW893
Very flimsily built. Doesn't switch itself off properly -- sits there leaking current until it is switched off at the wall or unplugged. This is the opposite of an "eco" kettle -- it is a kettle which wastes electricity. Worth paying more for a sturdily built kettle which will be safe to use, and which allows you to boil small amounts of water. The dual reservoir business is just a gimmick, in my opinion. It is a way of making money out of people's concern for the environment. ...
