Review of Economics - John Sloman by segyeshin

Advantages: Good explanations.
Disadvantages: Doesn't strictly follow the AS/A2 syllabus.

...with the basics of what economics is, and gets on to the more complicated stuff from there. It's not overly daunting for the beginners, and that's a great feat for a 800-odd page book to achieve. The book explains economic concepts and theories very well, with colourful graphs and case studies to aid understanding. The book also includes some questions and summaries of chapters. The book covers a lot of topics. As far as I can tell, it covers most ...
...bad if you are studying economics for A-level only. I don't think I can write this review without mentioning another book, also called economics, by Alain Anderton. That one does advertise itself as an A-level textbook, and follows the A-level syllabus closely and rather well. If you are studying for A-levels and are not planning to study economics any further, then that one may be for you. Although I have to say, I found this one easier to follow, ... Read review

Economics in the real world
Review of Economics for Business - Mark Sutcliffe, John Sloman by Achtel

Advantages: entertaining style of writing, many additional sources of information
Disadvantages: no mathematical coverage of topics

...the core textbook of the Economics course I'm doing as part of my course in Management Studies. I got it from Amazon for about 33 pounds, which is a reasonable amount for an economics textbook. The book is especially designed for people who want a good understanding of economics in order to apply it to a "real-life" (i.e. business) context. Before you start reading the review, I would like to point out that it is definitely *not* a good textbook ...

The new economics of everything
Review of The Logic of Life: Uncovering the New Economics of Everything - Tim Harford by ckhawk

Advantages: Deeply engrossing, interesting new perspective on society
Disadvantages: Highly conceptual not for everyone.

...insightful view into not only the head of an economist but society as well. This is a book by and economists and some concepts like supply and demand are present however Tim Harford effortlessly weaves his ideas and concepts into your mind allowing you to explore why it is a teenage moving from vaginal intercourse to oral sex is rational, when perhaps at first glance there is no link at all, why your boss contrary to popular belief HAS to be overpaid. ...
...leaving you lost and in the cold think again, Tim Harford dedicates the first chapter just introducing you to the basis of the book so you can soon be seamlessly forgetting everything you thought of people and introduce you to the new economics of everything. Everything from supply and demand in context and social ecomomics is apparent here but not using bar charts and graphs but by talking of wonderful areas such as "the marriage supermarket" but ... Rich Dad Poor Dad
Review of Rich Dad, Poor Dad - Sharon L. Lechter, Robert Kiyosaki by oliver_deguzman2000

Advantages: Very motivating
Disadvantages: All theoretical, but needs to be proven

...the two perspective of a Rich Dad, and Poor Dad. The Poor Dad who is his own biological father and the Rich Dad, who was his friends father. Both dads were good dads, but both dads have different perspective on how to become rich. Poor dad worked as a school teacher with the highest degree, while rich dad worked and build businesses. In the end poor dad worked his whole life. While rich dad became a multi-billionaire.The main thing that has been ...
...to be conscious on working smart rather than working hard. Robert Kiyosaki stresses that everyone should not work hard for money but to let their money work hard for them . This is made possible through a firm financial literacy and to know how to identify yourself in what quadrant you are in the cash flow quadrant. Mr. Kiyosaki indicated one investment instrument that is very risk friendly which is through real estate. But first of all one should ... Read review

Freakonomics
Review of Freakonomics - Stephen Dubner, Steven Levitt by sjwright

Advantages: Amusing, interesting, good value for money, readable by anyone
Disadvantages: Lots of figures

When i tell people to read this book usually the first response is along the lines of "economics? i would i waste my time reading a book about business? It has nothing to do with me". The fact is, as this book will show you, economics is not just about business, it is about the decisions we make in living our lives. Still not sounding appealing? Well Levitt and Dubner don't just use normal examples, they use amusing and thought provoking examples ...
...Ku Klux Klan have in common?" "Why do drug dealers live with their mothers?" "How can your name affect how well you do in life?" You don't need to know much about economics to enjoy this book although some knowledge allows you to understand some of the more complex points. There is also a lot of figures in some points which may put some readers off but are essential to back up the arguments they present in the book. Overall its well worth the ... Read review
