Advantages: enviromentally friendly, keeps white white, kind to skin Disadvantages: mostly found only in larger supermarket chains, though available by mail order

I was very impressed. My husbands work clothes and the baby's clothes and nappies came out equally clean and unstained using both their washing powder and bleach (which is safe for colorfast garments). She buys hers in bulk from a Fair Trade type company, so when it was time for us to go home, she pressed a box of the bleach in my hand.
Now I was not sure just how good the bleach would be on its own. I pondered swapping over to their washing powder from my homemade washing gel, but come the first stain, I decided to give them a go together. presto! Stain gone. Occasionally i get free samples of Persil in the post, and try them out in between making my own patch of laundry sopa, and the bleach has performed equally well. I now purchase a box as necessary from our local Asda, though I have also seen it at Safeway. If you can't find it at a shop near you, Goodnessdirect.co.uk carry it.
Only a few stains have proved to be very resistant. Motor grease and biro are two main culprits for this in my house, but with motor grease, you really need a specialist stain remover anyway, and biro , well for biro you can always use Vanish, a second main stay for us desperate laundry doers.
The ingredients are few and mineral oriented, being salt, limestone and oxygentated water to be precise. Nothing there to harm skin or the environment there, making it spot on not only for responsible eco-consumerism, but for persons with delicate skins. My baby daughter has eczema, so I am sure you can see the benefits there, especially when needing to remove stains from her clothes and nappies!
Now for cost. The cost of a 400 gram box of powdered bleach is about £1.55. This is more economical than it sounds as you only need 1 15 gram teaspoonful a washload to keep whites from yellowing and greying, and 2 of these teaspoonfuls to remove stains including ones such as tea, juices, or even coffee. So with it not being a huge outlay to give it a go, I heartily suggest you try this product!
Advantages: It is ecologicaly friendly, effective and kind to skin. Disadvantages: Not always availbale in supermarkets you may need to go to health food shop.
I discoveed this product recently rather by luck than judgement. My sister has ben going on at me for ages about trying 'Ecover' washing powder, so I went and bought a box from the local helath Food shop. When I opened the box at home, I realized that it contained a free packet of their 'Ecover' laundry bleach, so I decided, it's free, I'll give it a whirl. I can only say that I was really surprised with the results.
The bleach can be used either ... ...both (depending on the stain) and found the results to be impressive.
I can't use biological washing powders or stain removers as my daughter has eczema which is irritated by such products, so this is a very useful atlernative.
My daughter (age 6) has white socks for school, which are not easy to keep wite, as many parents will appreciate. However, using the 'Ecover' laundry bleach in the wash has kept them white rather than a dull grey. My uniforms ...

Advantages: Great for removing stains on baby's bibs Disadvantages: none
I found this product in my local supermarket on an end aisle with hand washing powders, not sure why its sold in this section because its used with your normal detergent in your washing machine.
You add :-
1 table spoon for normal whites
2 table spoons for dirty whites
3 table spoons for heavily soiled whites
Add it in your drawer in the washer with you normal detergent, even if you use liqui tabs/capsules or powder cubes in the drum you still ... ...for getting my babies bibs and tshirts clean because it actually removes chocolate and spaghetti which i have not been able to remove wihout the use of this laundry bleach.
It also works well for coloured items because it does not fade the colours. My 4 children have sensitive skin and this product is very kind to their skin and does not cause any problems or irratations, so its very kind.
I paid roughly £1.60 for a small box and it lasted 2 weeks ...

Advantages: Renewable, sustainable and natural, incredibly versatile Disadvantages: not great on dazzling whites
I love soap nuts!
I even grew my own mini soap nut tree and bonsai'd it.
I've found so many uses fro these leathery berries and the solution you can make by simmering them gently in water. They can be used to wash pretty much anything. I use them to wash me, my kids, our clothes, car, pets, floors, windows and surfaces. The solution is handiest in a spray bottle and used like a conventional surface cleaning spray, adding in a few drops of tea tree for an anti bacterial edge.
The solution has also kept the greenfly off my roses this summer and the blackfly off my beans.
An all round brilliant *green* product that I would recommend anyone to try.
They are a bit rubbish at getting white clothes dazzling white though so I'd have ecoverlaundrybleach on hand too. ...

Advantages: Plenty Disadvantages: Will need something extra for whites.
would take an awful lot for me to go back to washing powder. They can be purchased for £12.50 for a 1Kg bag and in our house where we do approximately 20 to 30 washes per week ( washable nappies! + dirty little children = lots of washing ), this amount is going to last at least 6 months. I am able to wash all my clothes on a 30 degree short wash and nappies on a 60 degree long wash and have been able to stop using fabric softners as the soap nuts are better at keeping the water softer. This is in a hard water area aswell!
The soap nuts do have some disadvantages, they will not keep whites white as they do not have any bleaching agents in them. For whites I need to add some EcoverLaundryBleach. This is chlorine free and a much better environmentally friendly product. This does mean that colours come out really well as the lack ...

Advantages: Works with all temperatures, fragrance free, no skin irritation Disadvantages: Slightly more expensive than other makes
Over the past year or so that I've been doing my own laundry, I have tried different brands of non bio detergent as I have sensitive skin, but each one I've used has had a horrible fragrance. I tried brands such as Fairy non bio, Persil non bio and Ariel non bio, but they all gave the washing machine a nasty fragrance as I opened the door. After almost giving up on my search for a fragrance free non bio powder, I came across the Ecover website. Now I'd heard of Ecover before, as I had seen adverts on the television years ago for their washing up liquid, however I didn't know that they did washing powder.
I set off to my local Asdas, looked up and down the detergent aisles and saw their selection of Ecover washing powders. They had a variety; there was Biological and Non Biological powders and liquids, and also some Laundry oxygen ...
