Advantages: Cleans effectively and is kind to the environment Disadvantages: Probably not antibacterial, doesn't disinfect
The Belgium based company Ecover has existed since the late 1970s and has developed a range of cleaning products (these include body cleansers such hand wash, laundry products and household cleaners such as squirty kitchen sprays and this multi-surface cleaner for what the bottle describes as "hard washable surfaces"), all with the intention that they can be used without harming the environment.

To this end, four of the six highlighted features listed on the multi-surface cleaner bottle tell the buyer that the product has a plant based fragrance, is based on plant and mineral ingredients, will quickly and completely biodegrade and will have the minimum impact on aquatic life. (I presume this to mean that, when you pour the dirty water down the drain, the ingredients won't harm the sealife when the waste water makes it back to the ocean.) It is probably no surprise to know that the bottle itself is designed to be refilled where possible and that the label, bottle and cap are fully recyclable. Something that puzzles me is why that first bit of information gets a prominent mention in larger type than the second bit, which is hidden away next to the bar code. I imagine it is far more likely that the green-minded consumer will recycle it than try to get it back to the factory.
I have seen this cleaner in two sizes (500ml and 1 litre, the more usually seen size). The large bottle cost £2 last time I bought it from Sainsbury's, but other supermarkets also stock it. The container is a firm, vaguely squeezable semi-transparent, yellow-green tinted plastic and you can see how much is left in the bottle in daylight. The Ecover logo (simple block capitals with a leaf-shaped gap in the letter R) is prominently displayed, coloured bright blue and leaf green, below an image of a plant with two leaves and curly tendrils. To the left of the plant is a basic house shape, in yellow. Smaller lettering under the brand name simply states "Lemon". Nothing on the bottle suggests disinfectant properties, so anyone looking for that feature might want to find other options.
On measuring out the cleaner (one to two capfuls per 5 litres of water is the suggested proportion) I can't smell anything citrus but it has a pleasant clean smell, a fresh plant type of scent rather than the aroma of your typical chemical-based cleaner (for instance, Flash). I usually measure out the cleaner before adding the water, which produces some bubbles but nowhere near the amount of foam you'd get from an equal quantity of something like Fairy liquid. It can be used neat on difficult marks but should be wiped off afterwards.
I think the product lives up the claim that it can be used on all hard washable surfaces. I've cleaned wooden and tiled floors, UPVC doors and window sills, painted interior doors, cupboards (inside and out), the bathroom and even the garden gate with this and seen good results. It's also effective at cleaning our cats' feeding area - this worktop gets covered in milk and cat food but this product cleans it all off. It is quite good at removing that black-green coating that can build up on exterior gates or shed windows, particularly if they're under a tree. The instructions on the bottle do not, however, mention anything about using the product on food preparation surfaces, the shelves in your fridge or your cooker so I don't think this product is intended to be used on anything that food will be in direct contact with. (Another cleaner in the range, Squirteco, is noted to be safe on food preparation areas.)
I find that I need two lots of water (using the cleaner-to-water proportions suggested by the bottle) to clean our entire kitchen floor but this is partly because that particular floor surface covers a large area (approximately 16 feet by 12 feet) and it is constantly walked on by four humans and three pets. Judging by the colour of the water after doing half of the floor, the cleaner helps to shift a lot of dirt and surface grime. I tend to wash the floor by hand using a cloth dipped in the cleaner-and-water solution but I think it would work just as well using a mop.
The floor looks noticeably cleaner - in spite of the marks caused by general wear and tear that can't be removed - after I have washed it and the room does smell fresher. I don't use rubber gloves when I'm cleaning but I have never found that the cleaner caused my skin any irritation other than that general dryness that you get after cleaning without gloves, so perhaps those with sensitive skin would want to wear them anyway. I would definitely buy the Ecover cleaner again - although solutions like Flash look vivid and striking because of their colours, I think this one works just as well and smells nicer.
Advantages: Effective cleaner, subtle lemon smell Disadvantages: Bit dearer than other cleaners
I decided to give Ecover multi surface cleaner a go after reading the journalist Leo Hickman's Guide To Ethical Living column in the Guardian. There was a terrifying section in it about 'harmless' household cleaners and the strong chemicals we are inadvertently using in our home. After we have used them they enter the drains then the sea and are polluting aquatic life. The traces and fumes they leave behind in our homes are probably not very good ... ...with asthma and eczema. Ecover was one of the cleaning products successfully tried among others by mr Hickman and his family so I decided to give it a go - I've been using several of the Ecover products ever since.
*Foreword About the Company*
I wouldn't normally talk about a company background in a review but in the case of Ecover I think the proven environmental credentials are a relevant factor in choosing the product. Ecover has been going ...

Advantages: Effective, with no unpleasant chemicals or overpowering perfume Disadvantages: A little more pricey than the average
Ecover Multi-Surface cleaner has been hailed as an ecologically sound alternative to harsh chemical-based multi-surface cleaners. It has all the cleaning power of a standard cleaner but without all the strong chemicals that can irritate so many people.
The ingredients in the product consist of; over 30%: water, under 5%: plant and sugar based surfactants, ethanol (fermented from sugar), vegetable based soap, natural gum, natural essential oils, ... ...It works well as a kitchen and bathroom cleaner, general surface cleaner and window cleaner.
A similar product from Ecover called "Squirt Eco" is also available and that is supposedly for more applications including glass, chrome etc, but I've found the multi-surface cleaner is just as effective for these applications. ...

Advantages: suitable for vegans, eco friendly, really cleans Disadvantages: where you can buy it?
Ecover is a company who produce cleaning products in an "ecological, economic and socially responsible way in a unique ecological factory."
In other words they respect people and the environment. They use plant based ingredients, their production has minimal impact on the environment, they do not test their products on animals and all packaging is 100% recyclable. I generally don't bother looking into a company before I buy a product but I heard ... ...refillable and 100% recyclable.
All Ecover products are suitable for vegans but I think Ecover has such a good but obvious mission it would be great if everyone could use products like this and from companies like Ecover. A one litre bottle costs around £2 so its not expensive. I would highly recommend this product the only problem where to buy Ecover items from. Ecover do have a web site www.Ecover.com where you can read more on them. I bought ...

Advantages: Very good for the environment Disadvantages: None
I have mentioned the Ecover company in my review of the Ecover washing up liquid. So, no mention of the Ecover company in this review. No, siree! This time it is straight into the review.
Ecover multipurpose cleaner. It's great, because, as the saying goes, it does exactly what it says on the box. Or in this case, it does exactly what it says on the recyclable plastic spray container.
Firstly, as it is a pump action spray, there are not of those ... ...review…
Like every other Ecover product it does the job that it is designed for with admirable efficiency and relative ease. Time was, 20 years ago, that a so-called "green" product was expensive and just couldn't cut the mustard, as the saying goes. Forget about cutting the mustard! They couldn't cut through the dirt.
But that's not the case with this product! It bills itself as a multi-purpose cleaner, and that is precisely what it does. The ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Ecover Multi-Surface Cleaner"
I used to use fairy to clean my dishes but last year I discovered that proctor and gamble test products on animals. Now, I wouldn't state I'm any kind of animal activist, or a warrior for fair trade...I don't go vigorously seeking products to boycott, and I don't do a great deal of investigation into the products I buy.
That said, if I learn a product I often use is animal tested, I would endeavour to discover a superior and kinder alternative. That's how I ended up using Ecover.
Ecover is the lone non-animal tested and environmentally friendly product I was able to locate on my supermarket shelves, and was suggested to me by a friend who's very exacting on which products she will allow in her house. They produce other cleaning products as well: cream cleaners; multi-surfacecleaners; laundry products.
I went on the Internet ...
Advantages: Environmentally friendly, genuinely kind to hands, excellent cleaning ability. Disadvantages: Not available everywhere, supermarkets don't allow you to refill.
Our dishwasher is out of action. It's sitting in the garage feeling rather lonely. One day, when I've sorted out the conservatory/extension/outhouse, and it's become the laundry, and there's room in the kitchen, our dishwasher will be pressed into service once again. Until then ? and at the Murphy rate of house improvement it may be some time ? we are back to washing up by hand. Hard work, isn't it? Guess which washing up liquid we're using?
Ecover.
Ecover are probably the most famous of the "environmentally-friendly" manufacturers of household detergents. Among their products you will find: cream cleaners; multi-surfacecleaners; washing powder; fabric conditioner; bathroom and toilet cleaners; dishwasher tablets. They've been making them since 1979. And they've been making them in the world's very first ecological factory. It ...
