I don't generally tend to write reviews on mundane household products unless I find one that stands out from the crowd. Ecover Washing Up Liquid does just that in my view so I thought I would put 'fingers to the keyboard' to tell everyone what makes this washing up liquid different from the rest.
Why try the product?
To be honest I can't really remember what it was that prompted me to buy my first ever bottle of this washing up liquid. I had been a Fairy user for years and was quite happy with it, my mother always used it and what was good enough for her was just fine for me. I guess I must just have been having one of those days when I was trying to be a little 'green' and protect the environment so I picked up a bottle and took it home with me.
The next time I did the washing up I put a squirt of this into the bowl and tried it out. The first thing I noticed was there weren't anything like as many bubbles in the water. Fairy always gives an excellent lather and my first thought was to doubt the efficacy of my new purchase but it wasn't long before I realised that my glassware and crockery was actually gleaming on the drainer. The difference was quite noticeable, even though this almost clear liquid didn't give me lots of bubbles, it did seem to have great cleaning power.
I used for around a week or so and really liked its cleaning power although I did feel that on very greasy items it did struggle a bit with it. So, one day, when I had some very greasy washing up I switched back to Fairy and noticed something else, somehow my old product seemed heavy and gloopy in comparison to the light and fresh Ecover product. The Ecover washing up liquids are lightly fragranced with things like Camomile and Marigold, and Lemon and Aloe Vera and they tend to make other products smell artificial. I was hooked, from that day on I have stuck with Ecover. I absolutely love it. The cleaning power on glassware is amazing, time after time it comes up sparkling, I can't imagine going back to any other washing up liquid.
About the company
Now that I have extolled the virtues of this particular product I will tell you a little about the company that makes them. Ecover was founded in 1980 in Belgium and is now an international company. Ecover’s progressive environmental policy is not only demonstrated by the products it sells, it is also an integral part of the company’s business operations.
Their mission statement saya "Ecover strives to provide effective, sustainable solutions for the hygienic needs of people." I certainly think that they achieve this, having started with their washing up liquid I have tried other products and none of them have disappointed. Their marketing is low key but I think their products are superior to those which we have brainwashed into buying.
I wonder now why I had the view that a mass of bubbles was indicative of a good washing up liquid? Thinking back I think it is because I have been told that by countless advertising campaigns and yet, to be honest, I don't need masses of bubbles and if I have them I tend to need to rinse out cups and plates to wash the bubbles off! Surely it is better all round to have an effective cleaning product that doesn't produce them in the first place?
Would I recommend it?
Yes I would, especially if like me you don't cook with a lot of fat. I think the cleaning power is far superior to the products I have used previously and it is kinder to the environment.

I tried the Ecover dishwasher tablets and didn't think much to them, so I have never bothered with any of their products. I should do really as we have a septic tank.
