This is really a continuation of a review on AA Petrol Busters written a couple of years ago. From that web site you could find the cheapest petrol and diesel in your own area or for that matter in any part of the country. That web site closed at the end of 2004 presumably for cost cutting reasons.
First the good news - a new petrol price web site has appeared -and the bad news - it only covers Edinburgh. Now it won't come as a surprise that I live in Edinburgh and have already found the site valuable, even if only to confirm that my local Esso is always up there amongst the cheapest. The latest check shows that the difference between cheapest and dearest is 7p per litre on unleaded and 6p per litre on diesel.
Of course the actual price paid for fuel varies even more depending on the latest offers from the major supermarkets. The most common is 5p off per litre if you spend more than £50 on the "groceries". Noticed this morning though that the offer is no longer running at my local Tesco.
Back to the web site - the home page gives the five cheapest service stations for unleaded and for diesel. A link takes you to a simplified map of Edinburgh, showing the location of all the service stations. Being a good internet site, its interactive -a mouse over any location gives its name and a click opens a window with full address details a pretty picture and a further link to a detailed map. Quite enjoyed checking that they'd got all the stations in the right place on the map - good attention to detail? Didn't find any errors.
Other links lead to pages for each brand and for each geographical area - would you believe - north, south, east and west to keep it simple. It would have been helpful to see the geographical split indicated on the map. There is a request for ideas for improving the useability, so I'll maybe send that one in!
Not the most extensive web site around, though it perhaps benefits from its simplicity. But if you live in Edinburgh, visit regularly or are planning a visit for the first time, it's a site to add to your favourites. With prices now around £1 per litre it could save you a few quid.
