Well this is nearly it, I've nearly finished; in my fourth year, only one more term of teaching and then a final term of exams. So I feel like I'm in a pretty strong position to comment on the strengths and weaknesses of this city and university. The city itself - to be honest, it's hard to give both sides of the argument but I'll try. It gets very cold, it rains a lot, it gets dark early (but all of these are mainly winter problems) and there can be some anti-English feeling from the locals. Fair enough, because it's equally easy to avoid this. And that really is all I have to say against Edinburgh. It has to be one of the most beautiful, romantic and historic cities in the world. Yes it is small, and I confess to worrying that I wouldn't find enough to do for the four years I was here. That is really not a problem. In fact, its size is an advantage - everything you could possibly want is within easy walking distance, and wherever you walk around the city you get amazing views. For heavens sake, we have a CASTLE - I mean how cool is that?! The city is actually pretty student friendly, although not always as cheap as we'd like, but there is always somewhere to go and something to see. It's also very easy to get outside the city, to the beaches, highlands, borders or islands - wherever you want to go. As for the university, well it recieves quite a lot of adverse press - everyone has heard of the so-called 'yah' problem. If that description fits you, well you will fit in and find lots of like minded people and have a fantastic standard of life. If that description doesn't fit you, you will fit in and find lots of like-minded people and have a fantastic standard of life. There are around 20 000 students at this uni - do you honestly think that you won't find people you can get on with? As for the actual study, well I'll stick to the Arts side, that being what I know. The first two years can be frustrating - it's all very general and there really isn't much supervision. That can be annoying. But it gets better, and the work does get harder, so make the most of it while you can! 3rd and 4th year the pressure mounts up, but it's never unbearable, and the work gets REALLY fascinating! I've loved it. So in conclusion, I think the only thing that can be said about Edinburgh is that its a fantastic city, a great university, I've adored my time here and I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE!!!
Edinburgh University is currently ranked top in Scotland league tables, with over 20,000 students this is no easy task. The university is not only appealing on its diverse range of subject options open to student, but the location is arguably one of the best in the UK.
A typical year in Edinburgh will see the world famous Fringe festival, the world famous Hogmanay, a diverse range of bands playing in both small and large venues such as the corn ... ...rarity in Scotland. If Edinburgh doesn’t hold all the live music necessary then a quick train journey down to Glasgow will easily satisfy that need for live music – recently staring there were Muse, supported by Elbow, also Counting Crows and many more.
If music isn’t your thing then how about a bit of dancy-dancy. Many nightclubs are situated in Edinburgh, City nightclub, where the MTV after party was held – including guests such as Justin Timberlake. ...

Advantages: Great place to live, good unions Disadvantages: Expensive
Edinburgh is a fantastic place to live, in fact as an American tourist said to me the other day 'what a great little town'. Well yes, i can see where he's coming from because Edinburgh doesn't FEEL like a city at all. Particularly if you live in Pollock Halls you have the countryside (Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags) on your doorstep and there is always the Meadows by George Square campus and (studentville) Marchmont.
Edinburgh has lots to do ... ...three weeks a year) Edinburgh isn't great for gigs but its easy enough to get to Glasgow and back. And of course Edinburgh has lots of history! Its aesthetically pleasing in itself with the tenement buildings and the castle but of course there are lots of tourist attractions to get your parents to take you to too. Holyrood Palace, Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh Dungeons and the Zoo are recommended, as are the ghost tours and bus tours. And don't forget ...

Advantages: great city Disadvantages: a little pricey
As with all universities, Edinburgh has strengths and weaknesses, the city is great, with Arthurs seat and the meadows it has lots of park space. The shops are good, although Princes St is usually overrun with tourists, christmas shoppers and well everyone. The unis is rated highly in a huge variety of subjects, and most people will get a lot out of it as long as they want to put something in. There are good opportunities to get involved with societies, ...

Advantages: Freedom, time Disadvantages: faceless, unchallenging
Edinburgh is a dynamic and exciting city. You will not find a better town in which to spend four years, it has the largest student population in the UK, good and cheap venues, architecural and cultural wealth and opportunity to freely develop without any hinderance.
However it is not the place to go if you want do an Arts or Social Sciences course out of genuine interest or ambition. It will be crushed. Becuase there is no work. It is unbearably boring and there is absolutely no feeling of academia, work, achievement or purpose. Lectures are not compulsory; this isn't like the Cambridge review - that's bollocks. They don't HAVE to go to lectures because they NEED to go to stop falling behind, they go and see their personal ...

Advantages: interesting subject Disadvantages: unfocused, no job options in ecotourism
I did the one-year taught MSc Ecotourism at Napier University in Edinburgh and to sum it up, for me the course was overall interesting, but it comes with several caveats - the main one is that the course contents does not consistently focus on ecotourism and also the course management and coordination is often just plain awful. Moreover, good jobs are very, very scarce in this field. Despite it being a very interesting subject, considering that job options are so poor and the program often so unfocussed, I am not sure I would do it again.
On the plus side, the ecotourism class size is very small (usually around 10 students) which clearly is an advantage and makes mentoring easier and leaves space for individual interaction with tutors. Also, some aspects of ecotourism make just for fascinating subjects to study, so contents-wise it can ...
Advantages: Friendly. Snuggled into the heart of Edinburgh. Disadvantages: Poor Rep.
If you have your sights set on furthering your artistic abilities then, certainly, Napier is probably not the University for you.
Don?t get me wrong, Napier is the most friendly University I have ever been to (and I?ve been to a few) and a pleasant atmosphere is important when you are a young student looking to get settled in. Whether you are an artist or a scientist you will benefit from the non-cliquey nature of Napier students.
The title of this opinion is ?Common Sense Approach? and that is for a reason. Napier, the person, was a mathematician and Napier was once a technical college. It should not take much to work out that Napier?s strength lies in mathematics and in science.
Let us consider the two EdinburghUniversities. Yes, two universities as I can honestly rule out considering Heriot-Watt as a valid Edinburghuni as ...
Advantages: Decent sponsored facilities...yeh Microsoft. Disadvantages: Treated like a number and teaching is very very poor.
I am one of the many disgusted students from Napier University, Edinburgh, I am at the Merchiston campus doing an honours degree in the computer department.
The overall picture of the teaching methods is disgustingly poor, the main body of staff are simply there to collect there over inflated salary. The staff does not care about you or the % of dropouts or pass rates, only their salary.
Napier has completely failed me in providing an education, one lecturer being the very worst Dr Smyth of the computing dept, Head of Multimedia, to quote him in a lecture that sums him and his staff up " You all must shut up this lecture is about me, not you!" yes that is his outlook and it shows in the teaching and the manner the students are taught.
My advice to anyone interested in study at Napier doing computing is simply DON'T. Go to Edinburgh ...
