Egg has been outstanding for me. I haven't had much experience with them and I only use them as a savings account at the minute - they don't require you to have a current account to do this unlike some. Mine is an internet only account but here are the other possible accounts you can get:-
Internet Only Account:
6.0% guaranteed interest p.a.
All 'paperwork' done online
Check your account any time online through simple user name and password entry to your details
Choose if your interest gets paid into this account or ANY OTHER ACCOUNT! and also the frequency of it (monthly or annually paid interest)
Standard Account:
5.25% guaranteed interest p.a.
Possible to use internet, telephone and postal transactions
Easy to set up and use Direct Debits
Choose if your interest gets paid into this account or ANY OTHER ACCOUNT! and also the frequency of it (monthly or annually paid interest)
Cashcard Account:
5.0% interest p.a
possible to use internet, telephone and postal transactions
Easy to set up and use direct debits
Choose if your interest gets paid into this account or ANY OTHER ACCOUNT! and also the frequency of it (monthly or annually paid interest)
Cashcard to use at high street banks etc....
The rates are far better than the high street rates, although it is hard to say if they are the best of the internet banks. My internet account is certainly growing faster than it would in a high street bank but I have just seen that Cahoot (a similar online account) has a higher interest rate for accounts currently set at 7.0%. It might be worth looking there.
I haven't yet had to use the customer services, although I have been told of others who have had trouble with them being unhelpful and lacking knowledge. There are only one or two I have heard say this though and mostly the site all seems to work brilliantly. Any problems can be resolved over the phone and the advertising campaign shows surely that it is well established now and worth a look.
In summary the rates are brilliant, but look at Cahoot for its 7.0% rates and look at First Direct for security, they've been around far longer so may be worth a look if you want be sure they aren't going to collapse overnight and take all your money. Egg surely is safe enough though.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
The current interest rates are substantially different - ranging from 2.25% gross to 4.00% gross. I'm not sure what you mean by all paperwork done online - you still have to process your account application offline.
Advantages: great interest rates. 3 days to transfer money. easy to maintain account. Disadvantages: some of you may find the adverts on the website pretty annoying
