    If Eleanor Rigby poses a 'problem' its problem is loneliness. As evoked by the title, Coupland's novel is about the void that being alone presents us; all of us, at one time or another. Its protagonist, Liz Dunn, is a 36 year old single woman living alone in her spinster's condo, without friends, a social life, or a vase full of flowers to validate her existence. It is almost impossible not to empathise with Liz (and surprisingly I did so from my position as a 22 year old woman with a boyfriend). But, I think Liz's plight speaks to us all.
