The Big Muff has three controls for level, distortion and tone. Unusually for a pedal of this era the level control can actually provide a volume boost when the distortion is switched in. If you like your guitars to sound as if the amp is about to crack up and turn into a puddle of molten cheese then this is the distortion pedal for you. It would be safe to say that if you put anything through any Electro Harmonix pedal then it's going to sould amazing as they never did anything by half measures, and the Big Muff is no exception. The build quality of this pedal is phenomenal due to the fact that all the original versions were constructed from spare russian tank parts. Mine has been stomped on for over 20 years and there is barely a scratch on it although you should be aware that this opinion is on the original Sovtek version of the Big Muff. The new american reissue version doesn't have anywhere near the build quality and has a smoother sound due the the supposedly better components.
The Big Muff has three controls for level, distortion and tone. Unusually for a pedal of this era the level control can actually provide a volume boost when the distortion is switched in. The distortion knob can can provide anything from a mild crunch to a full on fuzz frenzy but even at the most extreme setting the tone retains it's massive RAWK sound and before you know it you have your Les Paul slung aroung you knees and you're tripping in the zodiac with the best of them. At the bottom end the tone knob gives a weird kind of honking attack to the distortion while at the top you get a more buzzsaw radio frequency sound to the guitar either of which has just the right sound to remove your forebrain.
For the best example of what this pedal can do listen to the 'Spine of God' or 'Superjudge' albums by Monster Magnet. A more sedate version can be heard on most Mudhoney albums including 'Superfuzz Big Muff' The only disadvantage to buying this pedal is having to go into a shop and asking 'How much is your Big Muff in the window', Just watch the staff roll around laughing.
Advantages: Authentic fuzz Disadvantages: not too sturdy
Everyone who's anyone has a Big Muff. I hung on till Electro-Harmonix reissued the 70s USA Muff. It's meant to sound better than the previous Sovtek version (I haven't had a chance to compare them yet), but its probably the coolest looking stompbox that will ever grace my pedalboard.
As with all the Electro-Harmonix pedals, it comes in a quality wooden box (although it's a bit too big, and my Muff rattles around in it). Having paid £65 for it, I ... ...for a distortion when everybody has this effect on their amp).
With the sustain (gain) control turned up all the way, I set the level so it matched my clean channel, and fiddled around with the tone control. Personally, I bought the Big Muff for its low, muddy, rumbly fuzz. And, oh my God, does it rumble! With virtually any guitar and amp you can sound like Billy Corgan (if you want to). The pedal can also produce some great lead sounds, with the ...
