Tunes for life 4 - One step higher
Review of Cafe Del Mar Ibiza Vol.5 (Compiled By Jose Padilla) - Various Artists by craiggy_boy

Advantages: Some astoundingly moving tracks, unbeatable for its chill value
Disadvantages: A little inaccessible at times

Ahh yes, the lovely old compilation CD …. It seems that they’re released one after another – filling our music shop’s shelves with different colours, genres and names every week. Not a night goes by when I don’t see “New mega hits – the best ever volume 5” advertised on prime time TV; and I often wonder how much money the music industry is making from people who will go out week after week, to buy albums ...
...together and consistently bad … It appears to me though, that there are different styles of compilation CD. These fall into 2 distinct types: the dance mix CD, and the stand alone track CD. Now I can quite happily sit down and listen to a whole disc of the mix CD nature from start to finish– because let’s face it, they’re designed that way. If you go to a club you can’t hit fast forward if you don’t like what’s ... Read review

Amour, Imagination, Rêve
Review of Moon Safari - Air by Taminique

Advantages: Relaxing, experimental, innovative
Disadvantages: None

This album from the French pair of artists (Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel) is a great chillout CD. Many of the songs have no lyrics are are simply a keyboard and a bass guitar comining to make a jazzy and ambient sound. The songs sound quite experimental and although relaxing are not boring. One of my favorite songs "All I Need" is from this album, the lyrics are in English and sung by Beth Hirsch who has a beautiful voice. The tracks such ...
...are some of the best to listen to because the focus is more on the music than the lyrics. However, the lyrics where they are used are thought provoking and have a good sound. The band's name stands for Amour, Imagination, Rêve, which means Love, Imagination, Dream. These sentiments definitely come across in this album. ... Read review

Cutting Through The Electronic Barriers
Review of Silent Shout (+DVD) - Knife (The) by Tubthumper17

Advantages: Good for dancing or chilling out, great tracks, 2 CDs and 1 DVD for around £12
Disadvantages: None

I got into The Knife after hearing Like A Pen when a friend took the "Silent Shout" album round for background music during a game of poker. After the first listen of this album, the poker became part of the background as we listened to this. I have never been into the electronic genre, but I am now starting to make in roads to it, as this album has really opened my eyes as to what is out there. It surprises me to know that they are not that well ...
...Silent Shout This album takes you in on the first listen, and the title track starts with a thumping bass, which you'd maybe expect to find in a dance track, but 10 seconds in, it opens up with the keyboard. It's a song you could dance to, as well as just chill out to. 9/10 Neverland This is also another good mixture of keyboards, drums and bass. Not my favourite song on the album, but I love the breakdown at 1:54 which lasts until 2:58. 7/10 ... Read review

A lovely down tempo album to be lazy to
Review of Talkie Walkie - Air by prophet271

Advantages: A beautifully produced collection of 'lazy' music
Disadvantages: None this album is sublime

Air have grown up with this album, it for me is their best. I know most people think I'm mad, but for me each track conjures up a different image of what I would be doing had I all the money I need. They've kept away from the more upbeat drum and synth line programming the Moon Safari had and replaced it with really intricate layering of instruments, and have brought out their guitars. that just seem to float around you, forcing you to relax. Favourite ...
...TheFirstEscapist again) Mike Mills, they both include beautiful guitars and strings and really show the musical talent of the 2 french legends. This is a must buy, regardless of you musical tastes, you can fail to fall for the It was also the most used album by advertising agencies of last year, with the most famous has to be "Talisman" it was used by Orange for there animated campaogn last year. ... Lubricant for your ears...
Review of Lemon Jelly KY - Lemon Jelly by ayanayuk

Advantages: Excellent tracks, pretty unique sound, fun and funky
Disadvantages: None really

I got into Lemon Jelly courtesy of my best mate who got me some Patagonia Tour concert tickets for Xmas in 2002 (if you've never been to a Lemon Jelly concert - highly recommended) and I never realised just how well known their music was. From "Jamie's Kitchen" to the "Hello Moto" mobile ad and laterly Sky adverts, they really do pump out a lot of music and if you listen to this album you'll understand why. "What Do You Do In The Bath?" kicks off ...
...first tune I heard from Lemon Jelly when Jamie's Kitchen was showing on channel 4. Words can't do this tune justice. It's a beautiful, relaxing tune and perfect if you've had a stressful day and need to unwind. "The Staunton Lick" is remiscent of "Just Practice" by Mr Scruff. A nice countryish riff with slightly uptempo beat brings you gently back to reality with a few scratches and samples to boot. "Homage to Patagonia" takes us even more upbeat ... Read review
