Advantages: Good lectures, notes are extensive Disadvantages: No practical work in first year
...Although I'm only in 2nd year, the course has been relatively enjoyable so far. The lecturers are all quite extroverted and it's usually worth turning up on a Friday morning if only to laugh at Rod Carnegie (you have to meet this guy to beleive him). The first year's pretty easy although like any course it does get harder, the Engineering Applications in 2nd year was our first taste of practical work and it's been a good laugh, we've also learned how PCBs are made in electronics manufacture. I would have to reccomend Strathclyde for any form of engineering simply for it's reputaion and links with industry - employers are always around the place advertising for available graduates and summer internships...

Advantages: Good Job Prospects Disadvantages: Wow! So dull, and so time consuming
...E Cubed! I wanted to make robotic puppets, what could be better than making muppets for a living?
Well maybe working for Lego, that would be a pretty cool job. But how to start doing that? Well my careers advisor told me to do engineering.
Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of passion for engineering. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a cool dude but electronic and electrical engineering is a hard slog.
The degree involves mathematic manipulations for Laplace and Fourier Analysis. (Say these words to most engineers and they will shudder) It is discovered in the world of work later that Fourier isn't applied very much so must be on the course just for making it more difficult to pass. On the maths front we're talking Calculus, Algebra, Statistics and Matlab.
There are interesting bits though! History of microprocessors...

Advantages: excellent course structure, computer facilities, lecturers Disadvantages: first year can be a bit repetitive
...I studied at Birmingham Uni doing electronic and electrical engineering between 1996 and 2000 (just graduated). I`ve got friends at other universities (loughborough+nottingham) who have studied similar courses and have been able to see that Birmingham has a far better course structure, lecturers, and facilities than these (and many other universities). Although the first year repeats a lot of A-level Maths, the second, third and fourth (if you stidy MEng) years contain some very interesting courses and there`s plenty of options to choose from.
The school has a policy which means that all lecturers issue comprehensive notes at the beginning of lecture courses, which means that when you do go to lectures, you can actually concentrate on the information that`s trying to be taught to you rather than scribble desperately all the time...

My son is Thomas the Tank Engine mad and wanted more or less every Thomas thing he could find for Christmas. You name it, he wanted it! So I knew he would be happy with what ever we decided to get him. We considered the various Thomas sets, as all... more
This is where it all started. The starter set was my son's first exposure to Thomas the Tank Engine - First things first - there are at least 5 different styles of Thomas toys - none which interact with each other so sticking to 1 type would be... more
