I used to go to the Salon every other week to get false nails applied, but more recently I have been purchasing packs of false nails from high street stores and applying them myself. One of the main reasons for buying packs of nails and applying them myself is the fact that it is more cost effective as I can pick up a pack of false nails for as little as £4 where as it costs me over £15 to have them applied in the Salon. In my opinion there are upsides and downsides to doing your own nails, the main advantages are the fact that it is more cost effective to do it yourself, there are many different styles of nails to choose from and you can apply them in the comfort of your own home. Some of the downsides to doing it yourself are – your nails might not look as good as Salon Nails, you can get the glue everywhere and stick your fingers together and they don’t last as long.
I have tried lots of different False Nails bought from High Street stores, some have been really good ones which looked good and lasted a good length of time before they started falling off and others have been a complete waste of money and time applying them as they seemed to fall off really quickly and they looked awful.
As I have previously mentioned there are lots of different nails on the market to choose from, many from different manufacturers with prices ranging from a small £4 right up to over £10 per pack. The most popular type of false nail in my opinion has to be the French Tip style which looks clean, classy and elegant but there are a lot of different other types which aren’t as plain looking for those who prefer a more glitzy look there are nails which are coloured and have designs on the tips such as a glitter effect and even some with beads and jewels on them. I think they type of nail you choose is just down to personal taste and opinion. I normally opt for a more glitzy nail for nights out and sick to plain French Tips for during the week when I’m at work.
The most recent False Nails which I chose were the Elegant Touch Pre Glued Nails – mainly because I thought that these would be more time efficient and easier to apply as I wouldn’t have to mess around with nail glue and run the risk of gluing my fingers together which I have done on many an occasion. The Elegant Touch Nails which I recently purchased were from Semi Chem. and only cost me £3.99 which I thought was good value for money considering many of my previous purchases cost me in the region of £7 per pack. The packaging the nails were contained in was just like many of the other packs of nails on the market – contained in a small cardboard box which has a plastic front so as you can see the shape, design and general size of the nails inside it. In my opinion the packaging for these nails was quite plain and simple as it mainly consisted of the Elegant Touch Logo in a purple coloured box at the top of the pack of nails as well as a diagram of a lady’s hand wearing the nails. On the back of the pack there was some general information regarding the false nails and the fact that they were pre glued. It also showed you some other examples of the other packs of false nails available in the Elegant Touch range.
I opted for the Petite Sized nails as these aren’t as long as the other sizes and I also opted for the ultra short style design which is basically your typical French tip styled nail but has a shorter white tip than normal. In the pack there was 24 pre glued nails in 12 different sizes so you are bound to get a nail which fits each finger perfectly.
Before applying the nails you must make sure that your own nails are clean and free from any residue or nail varnish. Before applying the nails I like to just run over my own nails with some nails polish remover on a cotton pad just to make sure there is no residue – then apply a hand and nail cream about an hour or so before I apply the nails so as it has time to dry in and soak into my skin and cuticles. After this is done I gently push back the cuticles on my nails before getting ready to apply the nails on top of my own nails. One of the most important things to do before applying the nails is to sort through them and find the ones which fit each of your fingers the best, by placing the nail just above your own nails to make sure that the nails you are going to adhere to your fingers aren’t too small or too big. A nail which is too big for your finger is quite uncomfortable to wear as it tends to dig into the skin around the edge of your nails. A nail which is slightly too small for your finger is much better to apply rather than one which is too big. Once you have found all the nails which fit your fingers best you are ready to start applying them one by one. I prefer to apply the nails to my right hand first as it is easier for me to apply the nails to my left hand afterwards for some reason – I think it is because I am right handed and it is easier to apply the nails to my left hand with the nails already applied to my right hand. I sometimes find it a struggle to do it the other way around as I find it harder to get a grip of the nail and position it on the nail properly.
Because these particular nails are pre glued they are a lot quicker to apply and you don’t run the risk of gluing your fingers together with the Nail Glue which is very strong and similar to that of Super Glue. Applying the nails couldn’t be simpler all you simply have to do is position the nails slightly above your cuticle and hold down firmly for a few seconds before releasing the pressure and your nail is applied and stuck down. You just simply repeat this step until all of your fingers have a false nail stuck to them.
The general look of the nails is very shiny in appearance which is similar to that of your own nails painted with a clear nail polish, the tips of the nails are bright white and the rest of the nails are a pale pink colour which is slightly lighter in appearance than your own nail colour. The general feel of the nails is a soft plastic material which is quite flexible so as it moulds to the shape of your own nail on application. Some people have higher arched nails where as others have a flatter style of nail, it just depends on each individual wearing the nail and the type of nail they have, but as previously stated the nails are flexible and mould to the shape of your own nail.
The glue which is already pre-glued onto the false nails is like double sided tape in my opinion as it is like a sticky film on the underside of the nail. I was expecting the nails to be quite sticky and sturdy when applied just like using nail glue however I was really disappointed by the end result as the nails didn’t stick to my nails as well as I thought they would. I found that they stated to peel away from the fingernail about 30 minutes after application and they didn’t feel secure. After applying the nails I was replying to a few work emails and the some of the nails started to come off my fingers, mainly on my little fingers and index fingers. The instruction leaflet advised that if the nails started to some off that you should just apply a little pressure to the nails affected and that they would adhere to your own nail again, however I didn’t find this happened as the nails had lost their stickiness after an hour of originally applying them. I had to resort back to the good old faithful nail glue and stick the nails onto my finger again. After doing this with some left over nail glue from a previous pack of false nails I found that the nails felt more secure on my fingers and they didn’t come off when typing, doing the dishes or housework. In all the nails lasted on my fingers for 6 days before they started falling off which was really expected as I had to stick them on with nail glue – where as the pre glued nails only lasted an hour at the most before they started to fall off.
Removing the nails is really easy all you have to do is soak your fingers in some nail polish remover to loosen the glue so as the nail starts to come off. You should never try to forcibly pull the nail off your finger as this is very painful and you could damage your entire nail which would take months to repair itself.
In general the size and fit of the nails was very good as I found nails which fitted my fingers perfectly, and the length of them was also quite good as they weren’t too long – they were only approximately 5mm longer than the tips of my fingers. The appearance of the nails was also quite nice as they had a square tip rather than a rounded one, however if you prefer a rounder tipped nail you could purchase the other shape in the Elegant Touch range or file the nail into a more rounder shape.
The only downside to these nails was the fact that they didn’t stick to my fingers as well as I would have hoped and that I had to resort to the good old faithful nail glue which totally defeated the purpose of purchasing pre glued nails.
Personally despite the cheap cost of these nails and the comfortable fit and range of sizes available I wouldn’t recommend them as they totally defeated the purpose of pre glued nails. I think that these nails would probably be better for teenagers to wear as they are easy to apply and come off really easily which would be a good thing to wear at the weekends as they would definitely off in time for the weekend.
These nails can be purchased from most high street stores which stock beauty products such as Semi Chem., Superdrug, Boots, Body Care and even some supermarkets such as Asda and Tescos. At a price of £3.99 they are a slight waste of money as you really need to use nail glue with them.

...women, making your hands more elegant and beautiful. The nails are in a plastic container and each nail is separate from other nails. This is because the glue is pre applied to the underneath of each nail and if they where in the packet loose they would stick together.
The pack contains 24 false nails and they come in a variety of sizes so they will suit the smaller or larger nails.
